Influence of Feature Size, Film Thickness, and Silicon Doping on the Performance of Nanostructured Hematite Photoanodes for Solar Water Splitting

Photoanodes consisting of nanostructured hematite prepared by atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (APCVD) have previously set a benchmark for solar water splitting. Here, we fully investigate this promising system by varying critical synthetic parameters and probing the photoanode performance to determine the major factors that influence operation. By varying the film thickness, we show film growth to be linear with an incubation time. We find no concern with electron transport for films up to 600 nm, but a higher recombination rate of photogenerated carriers in the hematite near the interface with the fluorine-doped tin oxide, as compared to the bulk section of the film. ne mechanism for the formation of the thin film's nanoporous dendritic structure is discussed on the basis of the results from varying the substrate growth temperate. The observed feature sizes of the film are found to depend strongly on this temperature and the presence of silicon dopant precursor (TEOS). Raman and Mossbauer experiments reveal how temperature and doping affect the crystallinity and ultimately the photoperformance. We also use impedance spectroscopy to find evidence for an unusually high donor density, which allows the formation of a space-charge field inside the nanosized features of the polycrystalline hematite photoanode.

With growing concerns on future energy supplies, solar energy appears as an energy source whose potential remains to be tapped at a large scale. In the last two decades, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) have been considered as a competitive means to convert solar energy into electricity thanks to their low manufacturing and environmental costs, simple fabrication and high efficiency. Indeed, record efficiencies as high as 13% have been obtained for liquid DSCs and recently, solid-state DSCs using solid hole transport materials as well as perovskite materials as sensitizers have showed efficiencies above 17%. From a physical point of view, charge carrier generation in a DSC takes place in a photoactive light harvester chemisorbed on a mesoscopic semiconductor oxide. Due to the excellent electronic overlap, the exciton separation occurs by the injection of the excited electrons and holes from the dye into the conduction band of the semiconductor and redox electrolyte, respectively. A high surface area mesoscopic photoanode is necessary to ensure a high-density bulk heterojunction and efficient light harvesting in the visible part of the solar spectrum due to effective dye loading. This implies that the DSC has a large, heterogeneous interface through which photogenerated electrons may be intercepted as a result of the slow electron transport. The latter is governed by an ambipolar diffusion mechanism controlled by trap-limited hopping through a long path to the transparent conductive electrode. It is however hindered by the low electron mobility in anatase TiO2 nanoparticles and the multiple grain boundaries in the mesoporous film. The work conducted during this thesis aimed at developing new architectures for the electrodes of DSCs using notably atomic layer deposition (ALD) and inverse opal host-guest structures with different semiconducting metal oxides. First, using a self-assembled polymeric template and ALD, we fabricated a porous ZnO inverse opal backbone. Advantages are numerous: a high electronic mobility of ZnO, a precise control of the metal oxide deposition using ALD and in situ growth of ZnO nanowires at low temperatures. Besides increasing the surface area available for photoactive dye molecules, single-crystal nanowires offer a defect-free path for photoinjected electrons. However, because of the relative instability of ZnO in acidic environments, a TiO2 overlayer was deposited by ALD. This proved to increase the recombination resistance of photogenerated electrons and increased their lifetime in the porous film. This host-guest approach was further transposed to three related fields in photo-electrochemistry using different ALD precursors. For water splitting, a niobium-doped tin oxide inverse opal backbone was constructed, which served as a host for hematite deposited by atmospheric pressure chemical vapour deposition or ALD. In the field of plasmonics, a TiO2 inverse opal host was made to act as a scaffold for silver nanoparticles. For solid-state DSCs, we strived to achieve an ultra-thin ZnO inverse opal, which acted as a host for perovskite crystals. Finally, we studied the effect of very thin TiO2 and ZnO overlayers deposited by ALD on top of mesoporous ZnO and TiO2, respectively. We were able to accurately monitor the thickness of overlayers and study the effects on photovoltaic parameters such as transport and recombination rates of photogenerated electrons, photocurrent, photovoltage, fill factor and efficiency.

Solar cells based on dye-sensitized nanocrystalline TiO2 electrodes

This thesis presents a new type of photovoltaic solar cell based on dye-sensitized nanocrystalline titanium dioxide electrodes. In contrast to conventional solar cells, where light absorption is due to band gap excitation of the semiconductor itself, TiO2 with its wide band gap is transparent in the visible spectrum. The light is rather absorbed by a dye, e.g. a ruthenium polypyridine complex or a chlorophyll derivative, attached to the semiconductor surface. Charge separation occurs by electron injection from the excited dye molecule into the conduction band of TiO2, followed by rapid reduction of the oxidized dye by a redox electrolyte. Such a purely kinetic charge separation mechanism is also found in the reaction centers of natural photosynthetic systems. The analogy goes even further: Just as the chlorophyll containing thylakoid membranes of the chloroplast are folded to grana stacks for efficient light harvesting, a thin film of nanocrystalline TiO2 particles results in a several hundred times enlarged surface area for dye adsorption. While the efficiency of conventional polycrystalline solar cells is limited by charge carrier recombination at grain boundaries as well as bulk defects and impurities, the TiO2 serves only as conductor for majority carriers (injected electrons), so that recombination in the semiconductor is absent in this device. Thus high charge separation efficiencies are obtained even with thin film electrodes made from cheap TiO2 powder. We have investigated the theoretical principles, preparation and performance of the different components constituting the dye-sensitized nanocrystalline TiO2 solar cell. In the first chapter the current status of photovoltaics is briefly reviewed, followed by an introduction into the basic concepts of photoelectrochemical cells and dye sensitization. The second chapter deals with the nanocrystalline thin film photoelectrode. First the choice of the substrate and its pretreatment by deposition of an underlayer are discussed. Then different methods for the preparation of nanoporous TiO2 films are investigated. Three procedures were found to be suitable: in situ hydrolysis of titanium alkoxides, coating with a colloidal TiO2 dispersion and chemical vapor deposition of mixed TiO2 / B2O3 films. The colloid route is the most versatile, since the particle size distribution can be influenced during colloid preparation, e.g. by precipitation, peptization and hydrothermal treatment or by dispersion of a TiO2 powder made by flame hydrolysis or plasma oxygenolysis of TiCl4. Moreover, the colloid can be applied to the substrate by many different techniques, such as with a doctor blade, screen printing, spraying or electrodeposition. Finally the after-treatment of the photoelectrode by deposition of a TiO2 overlayer and the firing and handling before dye adsorption are addressed. The thus achieved improvements in electrode performance are rationalized by modeling the dye adsorption on the mostly exposed, dehydroxylated surface planes of the nanocrystalline anatase particles. In chapter three we investigate the sensitization by dyes, beginning with a list of the general requirements that have to be met by the sensitizer. An experimental set-up for the acquisition of photocurrent action spectra is described and the results for some of the most successful ruthenium polypyridine complexes are reported. The sensitization by chlorophyll derivatives and related natural porphyrins is investigated in some detail and the effect of different coadsorbates, such as cholanic acids and sugars, compared and rationalized by molecular modeling. The mechanism of photosensitization by chlorophyll derivatives is deduced from static and time resolved fluorescence quenching as well as laser flash photolysis and photocurrent/voltage transients in combination with cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemistry. The importance of surface states on the nanocrystalline TiO2 particles in trapping of the injected electrons becomes obvious from these studies. Finally we present the results obtained with some other sensitizers, such as carotenoate and a merocyanine. Chapter four treats the redox-electrolyte, which serves to transfer the electron arriving from the external circuit at the counter electrode back to the oxidized dye. We list the general requirements for the redox couple and discuss the peculiarities of the iodide/triiodide couple. The current status of solid electrolytes and their application in the dye-sensitized nanocrystalline TiO2 solar ce11 are reviewed. In chapter five we briefly report on the preparation and properties of the counter electrode, which should reduce the redox couple at low overvoltage and may at the same time serve a mirror on the backside of the solar cell. In chapter six we draw some conclusions with regards to the further development of this new type of solar cell.

Controlling Photoactivity in Ultrathin Hematite Films for Solar Water-Splitting

A promising route to increase the performance of hematite (alpha-Fe2O3) photoelectrodes for solar hydrogen production through water-splitting is to use an extremely thin layer of this visible light absorber on a nanostructured scaffold. However, the typically poor performance of ultrathin (ca. 20 nm) films of hematite has been the limiting factor in implementing this approach. Here, the surprising effect of a substrate pretreatment using tetraethoxysilicate (TEOS) is reported; it results in drastic improvements in the photoperformance of 12.5 nm thick films of hematite. These films exhibit a water oxidation photocurrent onset potential at 1.1V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (vs. RHE) and a plateau current of 0.63 mA cm(-2) at 1.5 V vs. RHE under standard illumination conditions, representing the highest reported performance for ultrathin hematite films. In contrast, almost no photoactivity is observed for the photoanode with the same amount of hematite on an untreated substrate. A detailed study of the effects of the TEOS treatment shows that a monolayer of SiOx is formed, which acts to change the hematite nucleation and growth mechanism, increases its crystallinity, reduces the concentration of carrier trapping states of the ultrathin films, and suggests its further application to quantum-dot and extremely-thin-absorber (ETA)-type solar cells.
