Highly frustrated magnetic clusters: The kagome on a sphere

We present a detailed study of the low-energy excitations of two existing finite-size realizations of the planar kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the sphere: the cuboctahedron and the icosidodecahedron. After highlighting a number of special spectral features (such as the presence of low-lying singlets below the first triplet and the existence of localized magnons) we focus on two major issues. The first concerns the nature of the excitations above the plateau phase at 1/3 of the saturation magnetization Ms. Our exact diagonalizations for the s = 1/2 icosidodecahedron reveal that the low-lying plateau states are adiabatically connected to the degenerate collinear "up-up-down" ground states of the Ising point, at the same time being well isolated from higher excitations. A complementary physical picture emerges from the derivation of an effective quantum dimer model which reveals the central role of the topology and the intrinsic spin s. We also give a prediction for the low-energy excitations and thermodynamic properties of the spin s = 5/2 icosidodecahedron Mo72Fe30. In the second part we focus on the low-energy spectra of the s > 1/2 Heisenberg model in view of interpreting the broad inelastic neutron scattering response reported for Mo72Fe30. To this end we demonstrate the simultaneous presence of several broadened low-energy "towers of states" or "rotational bands" which arise from the large discrete spatial degeneracy of the classical ground states, a generic feature of highly frustrated clusters. This semiclassical interpretation is further corroborated by their striking symmetry pattern which is shown, by an independent group theoretical analysis, to be a characteristic fingerprint of the classical coplanar ground states.

Intermediate magnetization plateaus in the spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg and Heisenberg models on two-dimensional triangulated lattices

The ground state and zero-temperature magnetization process of the spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on two-dimensional triangles-in-triangles lattices are exactly calculated using eigenstates of the smallest commuting spin clusters. Our ground-state analysis of the investigated classical-quantum spin model reveals three unconventional dimerized or trimerized quantum ground states besides two classical ground states. It is demonstrated that the spin frustration is responsible for a variety of magnetization scenarios with up to three or four intermediate magnetization plateaus of either quantum or classical nature. The exact analytical results for the Ising-Heisenberg model are confronted with the corresponding results for the purely quantum Heisenberg model, which were obtained by numerical exact diagonalizations based on the Lanczos algorithm for finite-size spin clusters of 24 and 21 sites, respectively. It is shown that the zero-temperature magnetization process of both models is quite reminiscent, and hence, one may obtain some insight into the ground states of the quantum Heisenberg model from the rigorous results for the Ising-Heisenberg model even though exact ground states for the Ising-Heisenberg model do not represent true ground states for the pure quantum Heisenberg model. Emergence and Detection of Exotic Phases in Spin-1 Systems

This work is devoted to the study of spin S = 1 systems, and more precisely to the emergence of exotic quantum phases in such systems, and to the establishment of tools to observe such phases. It is split in four main chapters. In the first chapter, we show how spin S = 1 systems can emerge from microscopic models, and which kinds of interaction might appear in the effective spin model. We start from a two-orbital Hubbard model, and by a strong coupling development to fourth order, we derive an effective model. We will see that three types of interaction appear beyond the Heisenberg interaction : a plaquette interaction, a biquadratic interaction and a three-spin interaction. In the second chapter, we study Raman scattering on systems with quadrupolar order to show that it can be used to probe such order. We first start by deriving an effective light scattering operator following Shastry and Shraiman calculation on spin S = 1/2 systems. Using this effective operator, we compute the Raman spectra with exact diagonalization and linear flavor-wave theory. We show that two different regimes appear depending on the incoming photon energy, and that combining this to different polarizations accessible with Raman scattering, the presence of quadrupolar order can be established with this probe. The third chapter is devoted to the study of the three-spin interaction that appeared in the first chapter on a chain. We start by establishing the classical and the mean field phase diagram of this system. We then turn to the quantum case. We show that, whatever the value of the spin is, the ground state is perfectly dimerized for a particular value of the three-spin interaction. The presence of such a point in the phase diagram implies the existence of a quantum phase transition when increasing the three-spin interaction. By an intensive numerical study, we show that this transition is continuous, and that its critical behavior is the one of a SU(2)k=2S Wess-Zumino-Witten model, at least for spins S = 1/2,1,3/2,2. In the last section of this chapter, we study the phase diagram of the chain for spin S = 1 under a magnetic field. We conclude this work with a study of the three-spin interaction on a square lattice. The classical and mean field phase diagram are established. It is shown that for a large three-spin interaction, the classical ground state is highly degenerate. This degeneracy is lifted in the quantum case by a process of order by disorder. We compute the quantum fluctuations with linear spin-wave theory, and show that some phases are selected over others. We confirm these results by an exact diagonalization study of the system.

Tensor network investigation of frustrated Ising models

In spin systems, geometrical frustration describes the impossibility of minimizing simultaneously all the interactions in a Hamiltonian, often giving rise to macroscopic ground-state degeneracies and emergent low-temperature physics. In this thesis, combining tensor network (TN) methods to Monte Carlo (MC) methods and ground-state energy lower bound approaches, we study two-dimensional frustrated classical Ising models. In particular, we focus on the determination of the residual entropy in the presence of farther-neighbor interactions in kagome lattice Ising antiferromagnets (KIAFM).In general, using MC to determine the residual entropy is a significant challenge requiring ad-hoc updates, a precise evaluation of the energy at all temperatures to allow for thermodynamic integration, and a good control of the finite-size scaling behavior. As an alternative, we turn to TNs; however, we argue that, in the presence of frustration and macroscopic ground-state degeneracy, standard algorithms fail to converge at low temperatures on the usual TN formulation of partition functions. Inspired by methods for constructing ground-state energy lower bounds, we propose a systematic way to find the ground-state local rule using linear programming. Characterizing the rules as tiles that can be tessellated to form ground states of the model gives rise to a natural contractible TN formulation of the partition function. This method provides a direct access to the ground-state properties of frustrated models and, in particular, allows an extremely precise determination of their residual entropy.We then study two models inspired by artificial spin systems on the kagome lattice with out-of-plane (OOP) anisotropy. The first model is motivated by experiments on an array of chirally coupled nanomagnets. We argue that the farther-neighbor to nearest-neighbor couplings ratios in this system are much smaller than in the dipolar case, J2/J1 being of the order of 2%. A comparison of the experimental correlations with the results of extensive TN and MC simulations shows that (1) the experimental second- and third-neighbor correlations are inverted as compared to those of a pure nearest-neighbor model at equilibrium (even with a magnetic field), and (2) second-neighbor couplings as small as 1% of the nearest-neighbor couplings will affect the spin-spin correlations even at fairly high temperatures.Motivated by dipolar coupled artificial spin systems, we turn to the progressive lifting of the ground-state degeneracy of the KIAFM. We provide a detailed study of the ground-state phases of this model with up to third neighbor interactions, for arbitrary J2, J3 such that J1 >> J2, J3, obtaining exact results for the ground-state energies. When all couplings are antiferromagnetic, we exhibit three macroscopically degenerate ground-state phases and establish their residual entropy using our TN approach. Furthermore, in the phase corresponding to the dipolar KIAFM truncated to third neighbors, we use the ground-state tiles to establish the existence of a mapping to the ground-state manifold of the triangular Ising antiferromagnet.
