Advanced Fiber Optics: Concepts and Technology

Few technologies have had as much impact on society as fiber optics. These tiny hair-sized glass wires have deeply transformed the way we access information, our modes of communication and even the behavior of consumers. Today, optical fibers are omnipresent in modern optical systems, so that a solid background in fiber optics is a prerequisite for any engineer or scientist who has the ambition to become a specialist in the conception and application of systems based on light signals. The aim of this book is to provide advanced students and young researchers with extensive knowledge about optical functions and their novel uses in the toolkit of advanced fiber optics. After an initial chapter summarizing the basic properties and fabrication of optical fibers, each chapter addresses an advanced feature of fiber optics, such as light polarization, amplification and the emission of light by fibers, nonlinear optical interactions, photonic crystal fibers, and generation of a light supercontinuum. Numerous concepts behind novel applications are presented, including the rapidly growing field of distributed sensing, for which natural scattering processes in the fiber material are exploited. The book also addresses the constant search for alternative materials, such the use of polymer optical fibers and the application of chalcogenide and soft glasses, that promise to turn optical fibers into an even more efficient and omnipresent tool for advanced photonics.

Among all non-linear optical effects observed in single-mode optical fibres, stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is of particular importance since it has numerous practical implications. SBS occurs when laser waves are scattered through the interaction of light with hypersonic acoustic waves in the medium. It manifests through the generation of a backscattered Stokes wave that carries most of the input optical power once a definite intensity level is reached within the fibre core. It limits the maximum optical power that can be transmitted through an optical fibre and therefore can cause a severe penality for fibre optics telecommunications. The backscattered Stokes wave is down shifted in frequency with respect to the incident lightwave frequency. This frequency shift – often called the Brillouin frequency shift – depends on the fibre parameters and on the wavelength of the incident light. It is directly proportional to the acoustic velocity and ranges from 12 to 13 GHz for silica fibres at a 1.3 µm wavelength. The Brillouin frequency shift is also very sensitive to environmental quantities changing the acoustic velocity such as temperature and strain. This feature makes SBS very interesting for temperature and strain monitoring in optical fibres and has been used in the design of fibre optics sensors. In the present work, a novel method to measure SBS characteristics in single-mode optical fibres has been developed. It is based on the so-called pump and probe technique using two counterpropagating optical waves within the test fibre. It basically presents the originality to require only one laser source and relies on an electro-optic modulator to generate the probe signal by microwave modulation of the pump light. The inherent high stability of the experimental set-up has made possible the characterisation of different fibres in terms of SBS parameters with a higher accuracy than the traditional two lasers set-up. The influence of dopant concentration in silica fibres on the SBS properties has been fully characterised. Furthermore it has been determined that the presence of core dopants decreases the acoustic velocity resulting in a smaller Brillouin frequency shift. The temperature and strain effects on the SBS characteristics have been extensively investigated. The problem of the evolution of the polarisation of the interacting lightwaves has been studied and a model clarified the so far unexplained behaviour in low birefringence fibres. A new measurement procedure has been defined to achieve polarisation-independent Brillouin gain determination. The second facet of the present thesis deals with the concept of distributed fibre optics sensors based on SBS. The determination of the Brillouin frequency shift gives access to the temperature or strain experienced by the fibre, while a modified OTDR technique provides the information on the position. Here again the use of a single laser source together with an electro-optic modulator brings several advantages. Besides the convenient flexibility in the generation of the probe signal, it makes possible to pulse the optical signals to localise the interaction within the test fibre. The overall temperature or strain distribution of the test fibre can be carried out by measuring the Brillouin frequency shift at any locations throughout the test fibre. A sensor has been experimentally achieved and its performances can be summarised as follow: spatial resolution less than 10 meters over more than 10 kilometres, with a resolution on the Brillouin frequency determination of 1 MHz, that corresponds to a ±1°C temperature resolution or to a 2x10-5 strain resolution. The dynamic range can be increased up to 30 kilometres to the detriment of the spatial resolution. The ultimate performances of the SBS distributed fibre optics sensors have been investigated in terms of spatial resolution and dynamic range. It turns out that these sensors are eventually dedicated to distributed measurements over several tens of kilometres with a spatial resolution limited to the meter range. Finally two practical applications of such sensors are described: the measurement of the strain distribution in installed fibre optics cables for telecommunications and the temperature monitoring of electrical energy distribution cables. On site measurements using a Brillouin sensor have been performed for the first time thanks to the high stability and reliability of the sensor.

Distributed sensing using polarization sensitive optical low-coherence reflectometry and fiber gratings

Optical low coherence reflectometry (OLCR) is non-destructive interferometric technique that allows measuring amplitude and phase of the light reflected from the device under test. OLCR is a powerful tool for the characterization of the various optical devices such as fiber gratings and optical waveguides. This thesis work had explored possibilities to combine the OLCR technique with fiber gratings to perform distributed strain and temperature measurements, and to develop novel sensing techniques as an alternative to classical spectral methods. Special attention is devoted to polarization sensitive measurements and techniques, and OLCR techniques that use only amplitude information, as an alternative to more complicated phase sensitive measurements. Using a polarization sensitive system two methods for the measurement of local birefringence of fiber Bragg gratings (FBG) using OLCR were developed. The first technique uses oscillations in the OLCR amplitude signal to directly obtain the beat length and the birefringence. The second method is based on the measurement of the OLCR phase and inverse scattering algorithm. Both methods were compared with birefringence obtained from spectral measurements, and very good agreement was obtained. The indirect method, based on local Bragg grating determination requires two independent measurements and mathematical reconstruction, but provides a very high spatial resolution of ≈ 25 µm. The grating length limits the minimum measurable birefringence in the direct method, but a good sensitivity of 4×10-6 was obtained, which corresponds to a Bragg wavelength shift of 4 pm. The spatial resolution is in the millimeter range in this case. The novel methods were successfully applied for the distributed measurement of birefringence of FBG under diametric load. New types of tunable devices and sensors – fiber Bragg gratings written in high attenuation fibers (HAF) were developed. Active tuning by heating was achieved by optical pumping of a pure single mode fiber without any mechanical or electrical parts, or deposited light absorption coatings. Tuning can be controlled by the applied pump power, the position of the grating, the HAF attenuation level, and the pumping configuration. The proposed design assures a high repeatability and long lifetime. Using OLCR these devices were successfully applied to measure the liquid level with a spatial resolution of 100 micrometers. Liquid level measurements that use both phase and amplitude, or only amplitude were demonstrated. The same principles could be easily applied to design other fiber grating devices (long-period, tilted etc), and sensors based on hot-wire anemometry, like flow or vacuum sensors.

Generation and application of dynamic gratings in optical fibers using stimulated Brillouin scattering

Since the invention of optical fiber cable data transmission using light has become ubiquitous in the past years. Nonlinear optical effects, which are hardly noticed in our daily life, have become crucial and highly influential for the design and performance of advance high-capacity systems. Future optical systems will definitely require signal processing operations to be performed on data signals “on the fly” solely in the optical domain. Brillouin scattering is currently one of the most prominent nonlinear effects in optical fibers, as it has found many applications in various fields of photonics, such as slow light, new high coherent sources, filters, optical fiber sensing, etc. In this thesis we investigate a novel phenomenon based on Stimulated Brillouin Scattering, which is called dynamic Brillouin grating (DBG). Investigating the process of DBG generation in optical fibers we propose several new approaches to realize new tools for signal processing of the optical signal by using phonon-photon interactions. First an analytical model is proposed to describe localized DBG generation in optical fibers using three coupled equations for Stimulated Brillouin Scattering. Based on this model we can show how the grating is generated and which shape it has in time when two pump pulses are used with optical frequency difference equal to the Brillouin shift of the fiber. Moreover optical phase conjugation is also theoretically predicted for the optical wave reflected from DBG. Several applications of Dynamic Brillouin grating are identified and investigated. An optical signal delay line or buffer is proposed and experimentally demonstrated using DBG principle. Storage of an input optical pulse is achieved by changing the position of the localized DBG inside the fiber. Here DBG acts as a Bragg reflector for the optical pulse and change in DBG position defines the time-of-flight of the input and reflected pulse. Single pulse delays can be dynamically controlled with a buffer capacity ranging from several picoseconds to more than one microsecond. Such delays show that DBG based signal delay lines can easily outperform slow light based delay lines in terms of delay-bandwidth product. Optical delay of pulse trains is also achieved, but with maximum limited amount of delay governed by the acoustic wave decay constant, which in standard silica fibers is around 10-12 ns. Moreover microwave photonic signals can be also delayed using DBG demonstrating true time delay. In this configuration, the reflection bandwidth of the DBG defines the maximum operational radio frequency. Relation of the DBG bandwidth as a function of its length was measured and it was determined that DBG exhibits similar properties as weak uniform fiber Bragg grating (FBG). Another application of the DBG gratings is demonstrated by exploiting this phenomenon to realize microwave photonic filters. For the first time, two-, three- and four-tap microwave photonic filter configurations are realized based on DBG. Free spectral range and IV tcartsbA stop band central frequencies of the proposed microwave filters can be easily tuned by adjusting the properties and positions of DBGs. Dynamic gratings generated by amplitude modulated pump waves are used to realize optical differentiation, integration and time reversal of input optical signals. Performed experiments demonstrate that a DBG based signal processor performs operations on the complex amplitude of the input optical wave. The DBG based integrator offers high flexibility in terms of operational wavelength and variable integration time, which can be controlled by changing the DBG length. For the first time, new operations of true time reversal of several bit sequences are performed using dynamic Brillouin grating. To overcome the problem of the decay of the localized acoustic grating, a novel method based on phase modulation by pseudo-random bit sequence (PRBS) is proposed, which allows generation of localized and stationary DBG at random positions inside the fiber. Such a method opens up new possibilities for signal control, and for optical fiber sensing. Advantages and limitations of the PRBS technique in terms of signal-to-noise ratio are discussed. It is experimentally verified that PRBS generation of DBG is highly attractive for the operations on optical signals where time averaging is possible, such as in the fields of microwave photonics and distributed fiber sensing. On the other hand, it was experimentally verified that realization of the optical buffer for continuous digital data using the PRBS technique is difficult due to the substantial amount of instantaneous noise. A separate chapter of this thesis is devoted to the application of DBG to the field of distributed fiber sensing. A DBG based distributed temperature and stress sensor in polarization maintaining fibers has been realized, showing 1 cm spatial resolution, which is - to the best of our knowledge - first time, demonstrated using a pulsed-based Brillouin sensor. The demonstration is performed in a 20 m fiber, but the sensing range of the proposed DBG based sensor can be expanded up to several hundred meters. In addition, it is shown that the demonstrated spatial resolution is not the ultimate limit, and a finer spatial resolution can be achieved by simply reducing the probe pulse duration. Another Brillouin distributed temperature and stress sensor is proposed based on the DBG principle. Here DBG is generated by modulating the phases of a continuous Brillouin pump and probe waves by common PRBS with unipolar encoding and modulation speeds faster than phonon lifetime. By choosing the proper parameters of PRBS, only one localized and permanent dynamic Brillouin grating is placed inside the sensing fiber. Distributed measurements of temperature or strain are accomplished by scanning the position of the DBG inside the fiber and determining the Brillouin resonance condition at each position. Using this technique, a random access sensor with 1 cm spatial resolution is demonstrated over a 40 m standard single mode fiber. In the proposed scheme the spatial resolution can be easily changed by changing the bit duration of the PRBS, while the measurement range is controlled by the length of the PRBS sequence.
