Application of the Rietveld method to the analysis of anhydrous cement

Résumé

X-ray powder diffraction allows direct measurement of the phase content in cement. More recently, whole pattern approaches such as the Rietveld method show an improvement in both within (repeatability) and between laboratory (reproducibility) precision. The aim of this paper is to discuss the influence of the different parameters involved in the Rietveld method and review the most recent quantitative X-ray powder diffraction studies on anhydrous cement. Comparisons with Bogue calculations, scanning electron microscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance are also discussed. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

KSm(MoO4)2, an incommensurately modulated and partially disordered scheelite-like structure

The incommensurately modulated scheelite-like KSm(MoO4)2 structure has been refined in the monoclinic superspace group I2/b(ab0)00 by the Rietveld method on the basis of synchrotron radiation powder diffraction data. The systematic broadening of satellite reflections has been accounted for by applying anisotropic microstrain line-broadening. The microstructure has been studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The partial disorder of the K and Sm cations in the A position is best approximated by a combination of harmonic and complex crenel functions with (0.952Sm + 0.048K) and (0.952K + 0.048Sm) atomic domains. This combination yields a compositional wave distribution from {KMoO4} to {SmMoO4} observed in the ab structure projection along q. The specific features of KSm(MoO4)2 and degree of the A-cation ordering are discussed in comparison with the previously reported structure of KNd(MoO4)2.

Improved quantification of alite and belite in anhydrous Portland cements by Si-29 MAS NMR: Effects of paramagnetic ions

The applicability, reliability, and repeatability of Si-29 MAS NMR for determination of the quantities of alite (Ca3SiO5) and belite (Ca2SiO4) in anhydrous Portland cement was investigated in detail for 11 commercial Portland cements and the results compared with phase quantifications based on powder X-ray diffraction combined with Rietveld analysis and with Taylor-Bogue calculations. The effects from paramagnetic ions (Fe3+) on the spinning sideband intensities, originating from dipolar couplings between Si-29 and the spins of the paramagnetic electrons, were considered and analyzed in spectra recorded at four magnetic fields (4.7-14.1 T) and this has led to an improved quantification of alite and belite from Si-29 MAS NMR spectra recorded at "high" spinning speeds of v(R) = 12.0-13.0 kHz using 4 or 5 mm rotors. Furthermore, the impact of Fe3+ ions on the spin-lattice relaxation was studied by inversion-recovery experiments and it was found that the relaxation is overwhelmingly dominated by the Fe3+ ions incorporated as guest-ions in alite and belite rather than the Fe3+ sites present in the intimately mixed ferrite phase (Ca2AlxFe2-xO5).
