Résumé

Energy demand continuously increases what contributes to higher emissions of GHG. Moreover, the primary energy sources like coal, natural gas and oil are depleting. To manage this problem, the scientists have worked on the different possibilities of renewable energy conversion technologies in order to get the most useful and cleanest type of energy. In this work, there are investigated possible biomass conversion technologies in order to satisfy energy demand for Poznan, the city in Poland. Actually, the energy demand is met by coal combined with heat and power plant (CHP). There is an interest of changing actual coal CHP plant with biomass to minimize emissions. The aim of this work is to choose the best thermo-chemical biomass conversion option in the concept of minimum investment cost. To achieve this goal, the thermo-economic analysis and optimization of different biomass conversion technologies have to be conducted. First, on the basis of the literature review, the models of biomass conversion processes are modeled in Belsim Vali software. Then, from 2008, two different scenarios of energy demand are defined for the city. In the next step of this work, there is conducted energy integration in order to find an optimal set of designed boundary conditions through maximizing the units of performance for the most promising types of biomass conversion processes. Finally, an optimal configurations and sizes of the equipments are found by thermo- economic optimization.

Within the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supplying sustainable energy, complex integrated energy conversion systems have to be designed by taking into account thermodynamic, economic and environmental considerations simultaneously. The process performance highly depends on the quality of the process integration and on the energy conversion, in particular, on how the heat requirements are balanced and how the combined heat and power generation is integrated. In chemical processes, the heat requirements after heat recovery are typically satisfied by the energy conversion system, while for fuel and electricity producing processes, the requirements are balanced by waste and process streams available on-site. The optimal internal heat recovery and utility integration can be computed by applying heat cascade models that are solved by using mathematical programming techniques. The mass and energy balances of the process unit operations are therefore satisfied by the optimal energy conversion system integration without having to explicitly model the heat exchanger network. The presented thermo-economic optimization approach combines flowsheeting and process integration techniques with economic evaluation and life-cycle assessment in a multi-objective optimization framework. The advantage of including the process integration model in the design process is that the influence of the process design and operation is reflected on the thermo-environomic performance of an energy balanced system in which the heat supplied from energy resources is integrated. The methodology has been successfully applied to study CO2 capture concepts in power plants using natural gas, coal or biomass resources, to analyse thermo-chemical H2 production processes and to evaluate different biofuel processes producing Fischer-Tropsch fuel, methanol, dimethylether and H2 by biomass gasification. The potential performance improvement through process integration is revealed for each case. In particular, it is highlighted how the optimization of the combined cycle valorizing the excess heat and of heat pumping options improve the process efficiency by simultaneously maximizing the combined production of fuel, captured CO2, heat and power. This shows that this computer-aided process design strategy combining flowsheeting, energy integration, cost assessment and multi-objective optimization is a powerful tool to systematically generate different process options, assess trade-offs and reveal process improvements through process integration.

Thermo-environomic evaluation of the ammonia production

Within the global challenge of sustainable energy supply and greenhouse gas emissions mitigation, carbon capture and storage and the deployment of renewable resources are considered as promising solutions. In this study the production of ammonia mainly used in the fertilizer industry and responsible for around 2-3% of the world greenhouse gas emissions is analyzed. Considering natural gas and biomass as a resource and the option of CO2 capture and storage, different process configurations are systematically compared with regard to energy, economic and environmental considerations. A consistent thermo-environonomic optimisation approach combining flowsheeting, process integration techniques, economic performance evaluation, life cycle assessment and multi-objective optimisation is applied for the conceptual process design and competitiveness evaluation. It is highlighted that the quality of the process integration is a key factor for improving the performance by valorizing the heat excess through electricity cogeneration. Including CO2 mitigation in the ammonia production allows to reduce the emissions, but leads to a slight efficiency decrease due to the energy consumption for the CO2 compression. For the natural gas fed process yielding an energy efficiency around 65%, the overall life cycle emissions can be reduced to 0.79kgCO2/kgNH3 with CO2 capture compared to 1.6kgCO2/kgNH3 without capture. Considering the biogenic nature of the carbon in the biomass, the emissions drop to -1.79kgCO2/kgNH3 for the biomass process having an energy efficiency of 50%. The economic competitiveness highly depends on the resource price and the introduction of a carbon tax. This study reveals the potential of the decarbonisation of the fertilizer industry. Scenario modelling and optimisation of renewable energy integration for the energy transition

A large number of countries have engaged themselves in an energy transition towards more re- newable energy in their energy systems. Motivations stem mainly from the need to reduce CO2 emissions, and from a desire of their population to phase out technologies such as nuclear. Most of these countries promote biomass, wind and solar energy sources, among other possibilities. How- ever the current rate of deployment of renewable energy systems globally is not sufficient to reach the CO2 emissions reduction that would allow to maintain the global average temperature increase below the 2°C threshold. The main barriers to a wider integration of renewable energy systems are i) their limited realisable potential, ii) their still limited competitiveness, iii) their intermittence; iv) public acceptance often related to poor level of energy literacy amongst citizens. Citizens are key decision-makers. They must decide on energy policies and on the energy technologies they use, hence they have the power to foster or halt the energy transition. This thesis presents two different strategies for addressing the problem of the integration of re- newable energy sources for energy transitions. The first one (Chapter 1) consists in developing an energy modelling tool to help decision-makers understand the energy system and find their own answers. The modelling approach also includes a new methodology for the calculation of the total cost of a national energy system. A model of the Swiss energy system has been created following this approach, which serves as basis to develop the Swiss-Energyscope online calculator. This calculator and its model present an optimal trade-off between scientific rigour and user-friendliness, which allows the reproduction of the energy transition scenarios conceived by the Swiss Government, and consequently its use for energy policy making. The second strategy (chapters 2 and 3) profits from the possibilities offered by mathematical mod- elling and optimisation to analyse national energy systems, and derive insights for policy and decision-makers. First, a methodology using a mix-integer linear programming (MILP) model analyses biomass usage pathways to determine its optimal use in Switzeland in 2035. Second, in order to study the role of biomass, non-linear optimisation is applied to create future scenarios. (Chapter 3) focuses on the solutions to deal with the variability of renewable electricity. To this end, a MILP model with hourly time resolution is conceived to study the use of flexible electricity supply and demand options for the integration of renewable electricity. The optimisation methodologies are validated on case studies for the Swiss energy system. Regarding biomass, the results reveal that woody biomass chemical conversion technologies can allow for an overall better performance in terms of CO2 avoided emissions compared to direct combustion, as long as the produced biofuels are used in efficient technologies. Results also show that the combination of the gasification-methanation process of woody biomass with the production of H2 produced from excess electricity would allow to reduce the Swiss natural gas imports to zero by 2050. Concerning the integration of variable renewable electricity, the cost difference between using flexible electricity supply- and demand-options or electricity imports to deal with variable renewable electricity is below 2.5% of the total cost of the energy system.
