Thermoeconomic Analysis of a Solar Enhanced Energy Storage Concept Based on Thermodynamic Cycles

Large scale energy storage may play an increasingly important role in the power generation and distribution sector, especially when large shares of renewable energies will have to be integrated into the electrical grid. Up to now pumped-hydro is the only technology that has been widely used for that purpose. However the spread of this technology is limited by geographic constraints. In the present work, a particular implementation of the storage concept based on thermodynamic cycles, as introduced by ABB Switzerland ltd. Corporate Research, has been analysed thermoeconomically. This concept can be scaled up to a GWh range of stored energy, and is site independent. The underlying idea is to use electricity to power a heat pump transferring heat from a cold source to a hot source (charging mode), while storing the heat and the cold at both sources. Subsequently the energy that has been stored/removed to/from the hot/cold sources can be used to run a heat engine, hence re-delivering the electricity when it is needed (discharging mode). In the implementation presented here, using the ambient temperature as the hot source for both the heat pump and the heat engine allows taking benefit from daily variations of the atmospheric temperature. Indeed, the heat-pump can operate with a higher Coefficient of Performance (CoP) during the night and the heat-engine at higher efficiency during the day. This results in an effective increase of the ratio between the redelivered electricity (discharge) and the stored electricity (charging), compared to a situation where the hot source of both cycles are at the same temperature. The use of solar collectors is a further way to enhance this ratio by increasing the hot source temperature above the ambient temperature during the day. In charging mode, the system consists in an ammonia based Rankine heat pump interfaced at the evaporator with a latent heat cold storage, and at the condenser to the ambient through aircoolers. In discharging mode an ammonia based Rankine heat-engine is interfaced at the condenser with the latent heat cold storage, and the evaporator(boiler) of the thermal engine is interfaced with hot water produced by a field of flat plate solar collectors. A steady state multiobjective optimization of a 50 MW power output plant was carried out, with the objectives of minimizing the investment costs, and maximizing the ratio between electricity output and input. Several types of cold storage substances have been implemented in the formulation and two different types of solar collector were investigated. A storage efficiency of 57% at a cost of 1200 USD/kW was calculated for an optimized plant using solar energy. Finally, a computation of the behaviour of the plant along the year was carried out, reaching a yearly availability of 84.4%.

Thermo-Economic Optimisation of Solar Tower Thermal Power Plants

Amidst a backdrop of rapidly increasing world-wide electricity demand, solar thermal power generation shows great potential for supplying the electricity needs of numerous countries in the Sun-belt regions of the world. In these regions, the absence of significant biomass, hydrological or geothermal reserves makes solar thermal power the most promising solution for meeting that most fundamental of demands: energy. Amidst the different options available for harnessing the Sun’s power, solar thermal technologies have been shown capable of producing electricity at the most economically viable rates [32]. However, all currently existing solar thermal power plants have been based around the use of Rankine, or steam turbine, cycles which are limited in the efficiencies they can achieve. In order to make better use of the Sun’s energy, higher efficiency cycles should be used. With their high concentration ratios, solar thermal power tower systems are amongst the best options for making use of the Sun’s potential. As the energy delivery temperature of central receiver systems is higher, they harness the solar radiation at a higher exergy level [4]. This higher temperature also opens the road to the use of more advanced thermodynamic cycles. Hybrid fossil-fuel – solar systems are also imaginable [13], as the energy delivery temperature is compatible with standard gas turbine cycles. Hybrid systems can help mitigate the requirements of thermal energy storage, as well as reducing the perceived risk when investing in new solar technology, which stimulates research and development, as well as providing employment. Recent developments in the field of high temperature volumetric receivers [10] along with rock- based packed-bed storage systems have opened up an interesting possibility. High temperature receivers allow the use of higher-efficiency combined-cycle setups, whereas packed-bed units offer the possibility of cheap storage. Larger storage volumes allow pure-solar systems to extend their power production into the night, making hybrid options less attractive. This is compounded by the common practice of guaranteeing a preferred tariff for electricity sales from pure-solar sources With this in mind, a complete dynamic model of a power plant based on the pure-solar concept has been elaborated. The performance of the setup is evaluated over a range of days, using solar insolation profiles obtained from satellite data. In order to examine different design options and their impact on the performance of the power plant, a multi-objective, thermo-economic optimisation of both the power plant superstructure and operating conditions was performed using the new, dynamic models. By means of an evolutionary algorithm [17], a family of Pareto-optimal points were obtained, representing the trade-off between increased power plant efficiency, and lower levelised energy costs. Through use of optimisation, it was shown that exergetic efficiencies in the region of 21-27% can be achieved, for relatively low power outputs of between 3 and 11 MWe. These configurations correspond with levelised electricity costs in the region of 14-21 UScts/kWhe. In most regions, the use of solar power is encouraged by the guarantee of a preferential tariff for electricity sales from renewable sources. Sale of electricity at a price of around 24 UScts/kWhe [32] should therefore be imaginable, ensuring the economic viability of solar thermal power tower systems. It can be concluded that, when properly designed, solar thermal power plants based on combined cycles are both economically and thermodynamically promising. By raising the efficiency of the plant, the size of the solar collector field is diminished, increasing the otherwise low energy densities of solar power systems. By reducing the levelised electricity costs, solar thermal power plants become more economically viable, accelerating their construction and thus, hopefully, reducing our dependence on fossil-fuels.

Evaluating the need for energy storage to enhance autonomy of neighborhoods

Energy storage is generally considered as a means to bridge a period between when/where energy is available and when/where it is in demand. Storage plays an important role by providing flexibility to energy systems, increasing the potential to accommodate variable renewables generation and improving management of electricity networks. However, currently it remains unclear when and under which conditions energy storage can be profitably operated at a district level. The present study aims to quantify the level of integration of solar energy and storage in the Junction district of Geneva. A simulation tool is developed to investigate the techno-economical and environmental assessment under different scenarios. For a given investment over 20 years, the model calculates the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE), the autonomy level as well as the CO2 emissions. Given the assumptions of the model, four scenarios are analysed based on the combination of solar PV, storage, solar thermal and heat pump to find out an economically optimal configuration in terms of system size. A comparison with the Homer software is performed to test the robustness of the solar PV and battery model. The economic profitability of solar PV and battery system is in very good agreement with Homer and the autonomy level is validated by using a simulation tool created by SI-REN (Services Industriels des Energies Renouvelables de Lausanne). However, combining solar PV with battery system doesn’t bring additional autonomy to the model for Geneva study case. Under the assumptions of the model, to foster investments in solar PV and battery installations, falling investments costs seem necessary for the future. A reduction gap between buying and selling price in grid for solar panel is recommended to increase solar installations. A validated simulation tool has been developed in this work and provide a reliable based that will be extended in the future to include the thermal demand and production. The availability of thermal storage at a large scale as well as the production over a district should further increase the autonomy of the district.
