Résumé
Notions of identity, culture, tradition and history are key to understanding the contemporary architecture of Iran. Darab Diba explains how the establishment of the Islamic Republic of Iran in 1979 broke with an approach that for almost two centuries had directly equated modernity with Western influence. A revival of interest in Iran's own Iran-ness initially manifested itself in a retrospective interest in historic styles, but has more recently shifted into a sophisticated appreciation of the essence of the country's heritage.

Société occidentale
La société occidentale est le milieu humain qui résulte de l'Histoire, des institutions, des organisations, des normes, des lois, des mœurs, des coutumes et des valeurs propres à l'Occident. Entre les , la colonisation, puis l'impérialisme et l'hégémonie économique des pays occidentaux a permis la diffusion de plusieurs aspects du mode de vie occidental sur l'ensemble des continents, ce phénomène est appelé l'occidentalisation.
Western law
Western law comprises the legal traditions of Western culture, with roots in Roman law and canon law. As Western culture shares a Graeco-Roman Classical and Renaissance cultural influence, so do its legal systems. The rediscovery of the Justinian Code in the early 10th century rekindled a passion for the discipline of law, initially shared across many of the re-forming boundaries between East and West. Eventually, it was only in the Catholic or Frankish west that Roman law became the foundation of all legal concepts and systems.
Occident
L'Occident ou la civilisation occidentale est une aire culturelle dont les définitions recouvrent généralement la majorité de l'Europe, l'Amérique septentrionale et l'Australasie dans sa définition la plus restrictive. Sa société contemporaine résulte de la civilisation gréco-romaine (philosophie, science et droit) et de la religion chrétienne (branches catholiques et protestantes). Son emploi actuel sous-entend également une distanciation avec soit le reste du monde, soit une ou plusieurs autres zones d'influences du monde comme le monde arabe, le monde chinois ou la sphère d'influence russe.
