Early-age tensile properties of structural epoxy adhesives subjected to low-temperature curing

The early-age mechanical property development of structural adhesives during low temperature curing is critical for the outdoor construction of engineering structures, such as bridges or buildings. Construction of these structures is also carried out during winter time at low curing temperatures. Experimental investigations showed that the development of the tensile properties of a commercial structural epoxy adhesive strongly depended on the curing temperature. Lower curing temperatures significantly decelerate the process and consequently the rate of development of mechanical properties. At 0 degrees C, curing was inhibited or did not initiate at all. Tensile strength and stiffness developed at the same rate, although the former was slightly delayed compared to the latter. Significant development of the mechanical properties began only after the onset of material vitrification. This was in contrast to the development of the glass transition temperature, which increased particularly before vitrification. A proposed analytical model predicted the development of mechanical properties well, particularly under low isothermal and cyclic temperature conditions. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Thermophysical and Thermomechanical Behavior of Cold-Curing Structural Adhesives in Bridge Construction

The use of the structural adhesive bonding technique is well established in the aircraft and automotive industries where, in most cases, joints can be fabricated indoors under controlled conditions. In the civil engineering domain, however, load-bearing structures are normally erected on-site in outdoor conditions, i.e. joint fabrication is exposed to varying outdoor temperature and humidity profiles and particularly in winter, when long periods of very low temperatures are frequent, the on-site joining of structural components must remain possible. Consequently, and due to the generally large scale of the structural components, cold-curing adhesives are used, unlike in other fields where hot-curing adhesives are used. Although it offers many potential advantages in bridge construction, structural adhesive bonding is not yet widely used in civil engineering structures. This can be attributed, amongst other things, to the lack of knowledge regarding adhesive behavior during exposure to varying environmental conditions. Despite significant research efforts concerning the characterization of structural adhesives, the question of the changes that occur in the thermophysical and thermomechanical properties of cold-curing structural adhesives during their service life, and particularly at early age and low temperatures, is yet to be addressed. The objective of this work was therefore, based on experimental and analytical investigations, to understand the thermophysical and thermomechanical behavior of cold-curing structural adhesives from the time of the mixing of the different components and throughout the long-term service life. Investigations of curing at early age and low temperatures (during winter) showed that curing already takes place at temperatures slightly above 0 °C. The process is very slow however and several days of curing are required to attain significant curing degrees. The glass transition temperature, Tg, develops even more slowly due to early initiation of vitrification. A new and practical experimental method was developed to establish the relationship between glass transition temperature and curing degree for different types of cold-curing adhesives. Furthermore, cure kinetics (developed for hot-curing adhesives) proved its applicability for cold-curing adhesives at low temperatures. In contrast to thermophysical properties, mechanical properties start developing significantly only after the onset of material vitrification. Lower curing temperatures also significantly decelerate the development process. An empirical model to predict strength and stiffness as a function of simple or complex curing temperature profiles particularly for curing at low temperatures was developed, taking the temperature-dependent vitrification into account. During summer, the temperature at specific locations of certain joints (e.g. joints below the asphalt) may exceed Tg, which may lead to a significant drop in mechanical properties. The investigations showed that when cooled to temperatures below Tg, the mechanical properties fully recovered and even a significant increase in properties is achieved due to post-curing. An existing model to predict temperature-dependent mechanical properties was extended to predict the change in stiffness and strength resulting from the exceeding of Tg and subsequently after recovery. Over the long term and during ambient curing, a significant increase in mechanical and thermophysical properties occurs over the years and decades due to the completion of curing. A model based on the similar long-term increase of concrete properties was revised to also predict the long-term strength and stiffness of cold-curing structural adhesives. Finally several case studies demonstrate how the outcome of this research can be applied, particularly to predict mechanical properties at early age and low temperatures. Such results can be used to plan construction stages or estimate the required waiting periods prior to a bridge being brought into service.

Durability of structural adhesives in bridges

Besides the 50s revolution of the use of adhesives in the new construction in the works of strengthening and repair of different structural elements, adhesives were extensively used in bridges for a long time. Different applications on bridges were carried out in the last few decades. The most common application of adhesives in bridge engineering was in the form of resin mortar for either bridge bearings or expansion joint nosings. Recently more applications of structural, semi-structural and non structural joints could be executed using adhesives in bridges. In reason of its ease of execution and maintenance as well as its long-term durability, resins represent highly challenging materials in last few decades for the means of formulating bridge connections. Although adhesives are recently used on wide ranges in joints in bridge engineering, their complicated behaviour, particularly under low temperatures, could disallow an easier use of such materials in structures, notably in bridges. As the following project targets to provide a better understanding of thermo-mechanical behaviour of resins, two different categories of testing were carried out, in order to investigate the most important and basic characteristics of resins as well as direct relations connecting different properties. The first series of tests was focusing on the physical characterization of resins aiming to investigate the influence of the degree of cure (conversion degree) on different characteristics as well as the behaviour of the material, From previous experiences on the behaviour of resins, it was expected that the more cured the material, the better properties it could present, however this investigation was held in LTC lab using a DSC machine. Different categories of tests were carried out during the physical characterization in order to establish a reliable relation between conversion degree/conversion rate and time. Another effective resin property that was considered during the physical characterization of resins is the glass transition temperature (Tg); Tg which represents the temperature at which the material loses part of its strength and/or stiffness, can also involve another concern which is the degradation of adhesives when exposed to high temperatures. The second series of testing involved in this project is mechanical testing, which was held in Lab of structures. This series was aiming to investigate the mechanical properties of the resin, basically compressive, tensile and shear strengths of these materials. Finally this project was focusing on relating the physical properties including mainly the degree of cure as well as the glass transition temperature to the mechanical properties and their influence on the mechanical behaviour of adhesives.

Ultra-High Performance Fiber-Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) can be considered, due to its high strength and improved durability, as one of the leading recent innovations in civil engineering. Material scientists have developed a very efficient, high-tech material by optimizing the concrete composition and improving the density of the cement matrix. Its structural behavior and in particular its relatively high ductility, despite the brittle behavior of the cement matrix, is influenced significantly by the crack-bridging behavior of the fibers. This behavior affects not only the tensile behavior, but also the global material behavior, i.e.: bending (tension by bending), compression (transversal tension, confinement), shear, punching, concentrated load introduction, etc. In the presented study, the tensile behavior of UHPFRC is analyzed as a basis for its structural behavior. The investigations extend from the 'micro-scale' behavior of the crack-bridging fibers in one crack to the 'macro-scale' behavior of tension members composed of UHPFRC. To obtain efficient tensile performance, the use of the UHPFRC in combination with reinforcing bars is expedient. The bond between the reinforcing bars and the UHPFRC is investigated, in order to analyze and understand the structural response of reinforced UHPFRC tension members. At each level of investigation, emphasis is placed on comprehension of the mechanical process. The influence of the fiber orientation, creep, shrinkage, and pre-stressing is discussed. Based on the studied mechanical processes, micro- and macro-scale modeling of the structural behavior is carried out. The cracking mechanisms of UHPFRC are examined in the research work. For the structural response of reinforced UHPFRC tension members, the influence of the double multi-cracking behavior is particularly relevant. First, multiple meso-cracks form controlled by the fibers and then multiple macro-cracks form controlled by the bond between the UHPFRC and the reinforcing steel. With a model based on these mechanisms, the structural response of tension members made from different types of UHPFRC can be described. Depending on the configuration of the tension member (i.e.: type of UHPFRC, reinforcement ratio, steel type, pre-stressing), five different failure regimes result for reinforced UHPFRC tension members. For practical applications the following conclusions can be drawn: Tension members composed of UHPFRC show very efficient structural behavior. The resistance of the UHPFRC supplements the steel resistance according to its strain-respective cracking state. The well distributed cracking of the UHPFRC leads to a considerable increase in the rigidity of the tension member (high tension stiffening effect). To obtain an efficient tension member with a large deformation capacity, a relatively high reinforcement ratio is necessary. Due to the associated continuous hardening behavior and significant elastic deformation, the use of high-strength reinforcing steel without a yielding plateau is favorable.
