Née dans une famille mi-catholique, mi-juive, Catherine Clément passe une grande partie de son enfance sur les bords de la Loire avec sa grand-mère chrétienne, ce qu'elle raconte dans son livre Maison mère. Elle a un frère cadet, Jérôme Clément. Du côté paternel, catholique, l'un de ses arrière-grands-pères tient une pharmacie à Dinan.
