Present and past bio-available phosphorus budget in the ultra-oligotrophic Lake Brienz

A detailed budget of the fluxes of bio-available phosphorus (bio-P) was established for the ultra-oligotrophic Lake Brienz (Switzerland) and its catchment. Lake Brienz is a cold, deep oligotrophic peri-alpine lake that receives an annual load of approximately 300 kt of suspended sediments, mainly from two glacier-influenced rivers. The challenge was to overcome the associated high background of mineral-bound inorganic phosphorus (IP) of similar to 200 t yr(-1) that is mostly inaccessible to algae growth. The application of six complementary, independent datasets allowed a consistent balance of bio-P to be obtained. We made use of data on (a) the load imported by the contributing rivers, (b) net sedimentation from cores, (c) export of bio-P from catchment land to the surface waters estimated by a GIS model, (d) the downward flux of bio-P through the water column from sediment traps, (e) primary production, and (f) the mineralization rate of organic material from the consumption of oxidants in the uppermost sediment of the lake. The average bio-P load estimated from import measurements and net sedimentation is 7.0 t yr(-1) with an error of about 10%: An estimated 5.4 t yr(-1) enters by way of the two main rivers (including 0.9 t yr(-1) from sewage treatment plants), 1.2 t yr(-1) from the remaining catchment (including 0.4 t yr(-1) from sewage treatment plants that are diverted directly into the lake), and similar to 1 t yr(-1) from atmospheric deposition. Approximately 2 t of bio-P are retained annually in the sediments of the upstream dams and thereby withheld from downstream Lake Brienz. The maximum eutrophication of the lake in the late 1970s and the subsequent re-oligotrophication can be attributed to the loads of urban wastewater. The drop in biological productivity since the late 1970s is consistent with the decrease of bio-P fluxes archived in the sediment, the record of the sewage treatment plant outflows and the few occasional in-situ observations.

Hypolimnetic oxygen consumption by sediment-based reduced substances in former eutrophic lakes

We quantified the areal hypolimnetic mineralization rate (AHM; total areal hypolimnetic oxygen depletion including the formation of reduced substances) in two formerly eutrophic lakes based on 20 yr of water-column data collected during oligotrophication. The upward diffusion of reduced substances originating from the decomposition of organic matter in the sediment was determined from pore-water profiles and related to the time of deposition. More than 80% of AHM was due to degradation of organic matter in the water column (including sediment surface) and diffusion of reduced substances from sediment layers younger than 10 yr. Sediments older than 10 yr, including the eutrophic past, accounted for similar to 15% of AHM. This "old'' contribution corresponds to a 20-43% fraction of the total sediment-based AHM. The contribution from old sediment layers to AHM is expected to be even lower in lakes with deeper hypolimnia (> 12 m). In summary, oxygen consumption in stratified hypolimnia is controlled mainly by the present lake productivity. As a result, technical lake management measures, such as oxygenation, artificial mixing, or sediment dredging, cannot efficiently decrease the flux of reduced substances from the sediment.

Is phosphorus retention in autochthonous lake sediments controlled by oxygen or phosphorus?

Eutrophication of various lakes on the Swiss Plateau was targeted in the 1980s by reducing external nutrient loading and installing aeration/oxygenation systems. For five eutrophic lakes, three of which have been artificially oxygenated and aerated for almost 20 yr, phosphorus (P) balances were established using input, water-column inventory, export via the outlet, and sediment core data. To separate the effects of aeration/oxygenation from the effects of P-input reduction, two measures of P retention were determined-the ratio of net sedimentation to input and the ratio of net sedimentation to gross sedimentation. A comparison among the five lakes shows that, presently, P retention does not differ significantly between lakes with aeration/oxygenation and lakes with an anoxic hypolimnion, whereas retention at times of maximum P concentrations in the 1970s and 1980s was significantly lower compared with retention in today's moderately eutrophic lakes. This is in agreement with the finding that net sedimentation in all lakes remained relatively constant between 280 and 950 kg km(-2), independent of their P concentration. It is shown that constant net sedimentation is likely to prevail as long as P concentrations remain above a critical value of around 40 mg m(-1). Constant net sedimentation indicates that permanent deposition of P is limited by the sediment's binding capacity. Oxic conditions in the hypolimnion do not necessarily increase this capacity because redox-dependent P species may still be released within the anoxic bulk sediment and diffuse back into the water column. To characterize the P retention capacity of anoxic sediments, we suggest that the P burial rate be determined from dated sediment cores rather than from input/output balances.

The Chaoborus pump: Migrating phantom midge larvae sustain hypolimnetic oxygen deficiency and nutrient internal loading in lakes

Hypolimnetic oxygen demand in lakes is often assumed to be driven mainly by sediment microbial processes, while the role of Chaoborus larvae, which are prevalent in eutrophic lakes with hypoxic to anoxic bottoms, has been overlooked. We experimentally measured the respiration rates of C flavicans at different temperatures yielding a Q(10) of 1.44-1.71 and a respiratory quotient of 0.84-0.98. Applying the experimental data in a system analytical approach, we showed that migrating Chaoborus larvae can significantly add to the water column and sediment oxygen demand, and contribute to the observed linear relationship between water column respiration and depth. The estimated phosphorus excretion by Chaoborus in sediment is comparable in magnitude to the required phosphorus loading for eutrophication. Migrating Chaoborus larvae thereby essentially trap nutrients between the water column and the sediment, and this continuous internal loading of nutrients would delay lake remediation even when external inputs are stopped.
