Modeling and control of large salient-pole synchronous hydro generators and stability issues in isolated production mode

This paper presents the modeling, simulation and analysis of the dynamic behavior of a hydroelectric power plant of 2x343 MVA including hydraulic system, electrical installations, rotating inertias and control systems. First, the modeling of the electrical and hydraulic systems is described. The electrical system is constituted by a salient-pole synchronous generator with its ST1A excitation system model and PSS2B power system stabilizer model. Then, the set of parameters of the turbine speed governor of the hydroelectric power plant is determined with a specific identification procedure to achieve stable operation for different cases as interconnected or isolated operation. The analysis of the stability of the power plant is investigated through time domain simulations for different sets of controllers’ parameters and for different cases (simulation of the only electric part and of the whole hydroelectric system).

Forced response analysis of hydroelectric systems

At off-design operating points, Francis turbines develop cavitation vortex rope in the draft tube which may interact with the hydraulic system. Risk resonance assessment by means of eigenmodes computation of the system is usually performed. However, the system response to the excitation source induced by the cavitation vortex rope is not predicted in terms of amplitudes and phase. Only eigenmodes shapes with related frequencies and dampings can be predicted. Besides this modal analysis, the risk resonance assessment can be completed by a forced response analysis. This method allows identifying the contribution of each eigenmode into the system response which depends on the system boundary conditions and the excitation source location. In this paper, a forced response analysis of a Francis turbine hydroelectric power plant including hydraulic system, rotating train, electrical system and control devices is performed. First, the general methodology of the forced response analysis is presented and validated with time domain simulations. Then, analysis of electrical, hydraulic and hydroelectric systems are performed and compared to analyse the influence of control structures on pressure fluctuations induced by cavitation vortex rope.

Turbine Speed Governor Parameters Validation in Islanded Production

The transient behavior of hydroelectric power plants is of high interest for ensuring stability of islanded electrical power networks. Therefore, it is suitable to determine and validate the set of parameters of a turbine speed governor using a realistic simulation model taking into account the hydraulic circuit, the rotating inertias, the electrical installations and the control systems. This paper presents the modeling of a 4x250 MW Francis turbine hydroelectric power plant taking into account the dynamics of all the aforementioned components. The transfer function of the turbine is determined through a time domain simulation using white noise excitation for the determination of an appropriate set of parameters. The performance of the regulator parameters are assessed using two different models: (i) a hydraulic model and (ii) a full hydroelectric model including the model of an islanded power network. The stabilization effect of Standard Power System Stabilizer (PSS) is evidenced.

Simulation of Transient Phenomena in Francis Turbine Power Plants : Hydroelectric Interaction

Models of hydraulic components based on impedance method have been implemented in a software called “SIMSEN”. This tool allows the simultaneous solution of the electrical, hydraulic, mechanic and control equations ensuring a proper interaction between the four parts of a system. In this paper the interaction between hydraulic and electric part of 2 Francis turbines power plant is investigated by comparing the simulation results obtained with and without coupling hydraulic and electric phenomena. Using hydraulic, electric and hydroelectric simulation models, total load rejection, earth fault, out of phase synchronization and load variation have been investigated. Hydroelectric simulations offer the advantage to enable to study the coupling of hydraulic and electric parts and to optimize regulators parameters in interconnected mode.
