Suppression of the auditory N1-component for heartbeat-related sounds reflects interoceptive predictive coding

Although many studies have elucidated the neurocognitive mechanisms supporting the processing of externally generated sensory signals, less is known about the processing of interoceptive signals related to the viscera. Drawing a parallel with research on agency and the perception of self-generated action effects, in the present EEG study we report a reduced auditory N1 component when participants listened to heartbeat-related sounds compared to externally generated sounds. The auditory suppression for heartbeat sounds was robust and persisted after controlling for ECG-related artifacts, the number of trials involved and the phase of the cardiac cycle. In addition, the auditory N1 suppression for heartbeat-related sounds had a comparable scalp distribution as the N1 suppression observed for actively generated sounds. This finding indicates that the brain automatically differentiates between heartbeat-related and externally generated sounds through a process of sensory suppression, suggesting that a comparable predictive mechanism may underlie the processing of heartbeat and action-related information. Extending recent behavioral data about cardio-visual integration, the present cardio-auditory EEG data reveal that the processing of sounds in auditory cortex is systematically modulated by an interoceptive cardiac signal. The findings are discussed with respect to theories of interoceptive awareness, emotion, predictive coding, and their relevance to bodily self-consciousness. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Breathing affect self-other voice discrimination in a bodily state with increased otherness

A growing number of studies have focused on identifying cognitive processes that are modulated by interoceptive signals. Here we investigated whether interoception affects self-processing, by assessing changes in self-voice perception as a function of respiratory and cardiac cycles. Considering the fundamental role interoception plays in bodily self-consciousness, we additionally applied conflicting sensorimotor stimulation inducing a state characterized by a loss of self and increased otherness, and investigated its effects in self-other voice perception. Our data reveal that breathing, but not heartbeat, affects self-voice perception, by showing that participants (N = 30) discriminated self-voice from other voices better during inspiration, while being in the state of increased otherness and especially when hearing voices of other people. Loudness judgement of equivalent self-related stimuli was unaffected by breathing. Combining interoception and voice perception with self-monitoring framework, these data extend recent findings on breathing-dependent cognition to self-processing.

A growing number of studies have focused on identifying cognitive processes that are modulated by interoceptive signals, particularly in relation to the respiratory or cardiac cycle. Considering the fundamental role of interoception in bodily self-consciousness, we here investigated whether interoceptive signals also impact self-voice perception. We applied an interactive, robotic paradigm associated with somatic passivity (a bodily state characterized by illusory misattribution of self-generated touches to someone else) to investigate whether somatic passivity impacts self-voice perception as a function of concurrent interoceptive signals. Participants' breathing and heartbeat signals were recorded while they performed two self-voice tasks (self-other voice discrimination and loudness perception) and while simultaneously experiencing two robotic conditions (somatic passivity condition; control condition). Our data reveal that respiration, but not cardiac activity, affects self-voice perception: participants were better at discriminating self-voice from another person's voice during the inspiration phase of the respiration cycle. Moreover, breathing effects were prominent in participants experiencing somatic passivity and a different task with the same stimuli (i.e., judging the loudness and not identity of the voices) was unaffected by breathing. Combining interoception and voice perception with self-monitoring framework, these data extend findings on breathing-dependent changes in perception and cognition to self-related processing.

What is the self? This major philosophical question has been considered too complex to be studied in neuroscience. However, during the last 20 years, researchers from different disciplines within the cognitive neurosciences have started investigating the neural correlates of self-consciousness, using a range of behavioural paradigms and functional imaging techniques. Where as many researchers have studied highorder representational aspects of self-consciousness, such as language (i.e. the use of the self-referential pronoun "I" or "Me"), converging evidence suggests that the most basic sense of self, e.g. the sensation that we possess a stable and coherent representation of our body, that we identify with our body and that we perceive the self as being located within the bodily boundaries (e.g. bodily self-consciousness), is due to integration of bodily signals from different exteroceptive sensory modalities (vision, touch, proprioception). Others have highlighted the importance signals related to internal signals (homeostasis, interoception) for self-consciousness. Using lesion analysis, we could demonstrate a causal link between damage to the right temporo-parietal junction and an altered state of bodily self-consciousness, e.g out-of-body experiences. This was confirmed using functional magnetic resonance imaging, multisensory exteroceptive conflicts and virtual reality: if healthy participants perceived themselves as "disembodied", activity in the same cortical region (i.e. temporo-parietal junction) was systematically modulated. Moreover, we were able to demonstrate in a second line of experiments that interoceptive signals can be used to systematically alter bodily self-consciousness and somatosensory processing, extending previous paradigms that focused exclusively on exteroceptive signals. This was strengthened by our finding that the left posterior insula, repeatedly linked to the representation and integration of internal and external bodily signals, is implicated in another state of altered bodily self-consciousness, e.g. heautoscopy. Our results demonstrate that bodily self-consciousness is based on a neural network that represents and integrates both external and internal signals from the body.
