A sociological contribution to understanding the use of robots in schools: the Thymio robot

The Thymio II robot was designed to be used by teachers in their classrooms for a wide range of activities and at all levels of the curriculum, from very young children to the end of high school. Although the educationally oriented design of this innovative robot was successful and made it possible to distribute more than 800 Thymio robots in schools with a large majority in the French-speaking part of Switzerland, it was not sufficient to significantly raise the number of teachers using robot technology in their teaching after three years of commercialization. After an introduction and a first section on the design of this educational robot, this paper presents some results of a sociological analysis of the benefits and blockages identified by teachers in using robots, or not, with their pupils.

Design Methodology for Constructing Multimaterial Origami Robots and Machines

Robotic origami allows rapid prototyping of intelligent robots and machines constructed from thin sheets of functional materials. Multimaterial-based design freedom of origami robots creates functional versatility; however, the design parameters pose challenges in their mechanical layout and fabrication. While the conventional robot design follows a coherent and well-established design process, the construction of origami robots requires close study of their three-dimensional (3-D) and two-dimensional (2-D) geometries, compliant mechanisms, functional material specific components, and 2-D fabrication methods. In this paper, we report a systematic design methodology for building origami-inspired machines and robots based on these four essential design features. We provide their comprehensive formulation, comparing them to conventional robots and highlighting design challenges as well as potentials. We demonstrate the applicability of our procedure to the majority of origami robots in the literature and also validate it by designing a centimeter-scale jumping and crawling origami robot, Tribot, as a showcase. The 6-g Tribot crawls with fixed steps in a closed loop, adjusts its vertical jumping height by power modulation, and overcomes obstacles of 45-mm height by side jumps. This paper advances the design and fabrication methodology of origami robots, with customizable functionality from the ground-up.

Design of Hesitation Gestures for Nonverbal Human-Robot Negotiation of Conflicts

When the question of who should get access to a communal resource first is uncertain, people often negotiate via nonverbal communication to resolve the conflict. What should a robot be programmed to do when such conflicts arise in Human-Robot Interaction? The answer to this question varies depending on the context of the situation. Learning from how humans use hesitation gestures to negotiate a solution in such conflict situations, we present a human-inspired design of nonverbal hesitation gestures that can be used for Human-Robot Negotiation. We extracted characteristic features of such negotiative hesitations humans use, and subsequently designed a trajectory generator (Negotiative Hesitation Generator) that can re-create the features in robot responses to conflicts. Our human-subjects experiment demonstrates the efficacy of the designed robot behaviour against non-negotiative stopping behaviour of a robot. With positive results from our human-robot interaction experiment, we provide a validated trajectory generator with which one can explore the dynamics of human-robot nonverbal negotiation of resource conflicts.

Development and control of interactive reconfigurable robotic systems

While reconfigurable robots provide a new promising approach for interactive systems, the complexity of distributed actuation/sensing systems, coupled kinematics and desired functionalities also bring new challenges and questions both in control design and hardware development: What design approaches enable direct human-robot interactions to address the morphological transformations and constraints of multi-DoF distributed activated robotic system? How to implement in-situ, multi-stage, programmable, and controllable actuation for the desired range of motion and functionalities? How to design multi-DoF robotic systems and needed for operation in distinct, real-world applications? These challenges and research questions formulate the objective and framework of my thesis. Namely, I explore for the solutions to provide methodologies for not only building the hardware for reconfigurable interactive systems but also investigating the control algorithm considering human-in-the-loop and evaluating the effectiveness of the integrated system with different application scenarios. In order to address the challenges associated with the development of reconfigurable robotic systems for human interactions, I first outline the concept of an interactive interface between humans and robots. I study the design methods for intuitively and dynamically controlling multi-DoF reconfigurable systems and algorithms for integrating mechanical characteristics of the core robotic components. Then, we investigate the design space and limitation of gesture-based multi-modalities interactions for further exploring the controllability, scalability, and versatility in functions for reconfigurable robotic systems. To realize the reconfigurable interactive robotic system, the design, capability, and limitation of the hardware system need to be established and evaluated. One of my research goals is to take the advantage of current non-conventional manufacturing technologies and materials as well as overcome their limitations. I study and develop compact actuators and unique transmission mechanisms inspired by origami patterns that can be integrated with multi-DoF robotic systems. I start with the design, model, and experimental validation of core functional components. Then, we investigate the fabrication process which has an additive manufactured structure with subtractive manufactured functional components integrated for compact, light-weight, and distributed activated mechanisms. Lastly, I propose the strategies for configuring and controlling the functional components to achieve functionalities like multi-DoF distributed actuation, self-assembly, and tunable stiffness. The achievable functionalities are further examined with several application scenarios.
