Electrochemical oxygen reduction at soft interfaces catalyzed by the transfer of hydrated lithium cations

The oxygen reduction reaction by decamethylferrocene (DMFc), triggered by hydrophilic metallic cations behaving as Lewis acids towards water molecules in a homogeneous organic phase reaction, was investigated using cyclic voltammetry at the water|1,2-dichloroethane (w|DCE) interface. Simulated CVs, prepared through a facile 1-dimensional geometry in COMSOL Multi-physics software and incorporating interfacial and homogeneous reactions, were compared to experimental ones in order to elucidate the kinetics, thermodynamics, and viability of the proposed mechanism. The predominant O2 reduction reactions were proposed to occur in bulk organic phase, or in the vicinity of the w|DCE interface; six organic phase reactions were put forward. The first step was hydrolysis made possible through polarization of the O−H bond of water molecules available in the cations hydration shell. The metal ion behaves as a Lewis acid coordinating to the oxygen and weakening the O−H bond, making the proton more acidic, thereby facilitating attack by decamethylferrocene (DMFc) to form DMFc-H+. DMFc-H+ then participates in dioxygen reduction, generating the O2H• radical species and DMFc+. Afterwards, the radical oxidizes another equivalent of DMFc to produce O2H−, that can then abstract a proton from the metal ions hydration sphere to generate hydrogen peroxide. The disproportionation of O2H− and the ion-pair formation of Li+ and OH− make up the other two reactions. The CV analysis was based on two curve features; the DMFc+ transfer wave and the positive limit of the polarizable potential window – the edge of scan potential profile – including the metal ion return peak. The goal of this article is to determine the kinetic/thermodynamic aspects of this mechanism from the experimental electrochemical data.

Oxygen reduction by decamethylferrocene at liquid/liquid interfaces catalyzed by dodecylaniline

Molecular oxygen (O2) reduction by decamethylferrocene (DMFc) was investigated at a polarized water/ 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE) interface. Electrochemical results point to a mechanism similar to the EC type reaction at the conventional electrode/solution interface, in which an assisted proton transfer (APT) by DMFc across the water/DCE interface via the formation of DMFcH+ corresponds to the electrochemical step and O2 reduction to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) represents the chemical step. The proton transfer step can also be driven using lipophilic bases such as 4-dodecylaniline. Finally, voltammetric data shows that lipophilic DMFc can also be extracted to the aqueous acidic phase to react homogeneously with oxygen.

Electrocatalysis at liquid/liquid interfaces

This thesis is devoted to the study of oxygen reduction reaction catalysed by porphyrins at the interface between two immiscible electrolyte solutions (ITIES). Electrochemical and spectrophotometric techniques are introduced to these interfaces in order to gather more information about the transfer mechanism. Furthermore, the reduction of oxygen and the oxidation of decamethylferrocene (DMFc) in 1,2-DCE and production of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in the aqueous phase, on the basis of the two-phase reaction controlled by a common ion are investigated. Mass spectrometric measurements were carried out for the 1,2-DCE phase before and after two-phase reaction with an aqueous phase containing acid to indicate the stability of DMFc and the DMFc+ over the course of the two-phase reaction. Density function theory (DFT) computations have been performed based on developed a reaction pathway. Catalytic effect of 5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrinatocobalt(II) [Co(tpp)], 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-Octaethyl-porphyrin cobalt(II) (CoOEP) and two free-base porphyrins 5,10,15,20-meso-tetraphenylporphyrin (H2TPP) and 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octaethyl-21H,23H-porphyrin (H2OEP) have been investigated as a catalyst for a two electron reduction of O2 in presence of an electron donor at various pH values at the polarized water|1,2-DCE interface. Using voltammetry, it is possible to drive this catalytic reduction at the interface as a function of the applied potential difference, where aqueous protons and organic electron donors combine to reduce O2. The signal observed corresponds to a proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reaction, as no current and no reaction can be observed in the absence of either catalyst, acid or O2. [Co(tpp)] and CoOEP catalysis work like conventional cobalt porphyrins, activating O2 via coordination by the formation of a superoxide structure. The advantages of the present system is that, by controlling the interfacial potential difference, the proton transfer from water to 1,2-DCE can be accurately controlled. Accordingly, the driving force for proton-coupled electron transfer reactions is also effectively harnessed. Assisted proton transfer (APT) reactions were studied across the water|1,2-DCE interface facilitated by two free-base porphyrins such as H2TPP and H2OEP. At a water|1,2-DCE interface, the interfacial formation of di-acid H4TPP2+ and H4OEP2+ are observed by ion-transfer voltammetry and UV-Visible spectroscopy, due to the double protonation of H2TPP and H2OEP at the tertiary nitrogens in the ring. Additionally, "Ionic Partition Diagram" of neutral and ionisable H2TPP compounds is plotted to illustrate the various contributions of H2TPP.

Electrochemical promotion of Pt catalysts for gas phase reactions

The subject of this work is the study of the electrochemical promotion of catalysis (EPOC), also called non-Faradaic electrochemical modification of catalytic activity (NEMCA). In this phenomenon, application of small currents or potentials on catalysts in contact with solid electrolytes leads to very pronounced strongly non-Faradaic and reversible changes in catalytic activity and selectivity. This work concerns the system composed of platinum film electrodes, deposited on the YSZ electrolyte (ZrO2 doped with 8% Y2O3), in contact with an oxygen containing atmosphere (the O2(g),Pt/YSZ system). The aim of this work was to focus on two points in the phenomenon of EPOC: 1) The nature of the species present on the surface of the catalyst and their impact on the catalytic activity. 2) The phenomenon of permanent promotion of catalysis (P-EPOC), for which the catalytic rate enhancement is not totally reversible, leading to a long lasting activated state. The Pt electrodes were prepared via three different methods (sputtering, thermal decomposition and screen-printing) and, as expected, the resulting microstructure, observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), was found to depend greatly on the preparation technique. The electrochemical response of each electrode was characterized by the technique of cyclic voltammetry. Due to the occurrence of different site-related electrochemical reactions, the voltammogram shape was highly influenced by the microstructure of the Pt/YSZ contact. Based on the preliminary studies, the cermet electrode was chosen for additional electrochemical experiments, using chronoamperometry, chronopotentiometry, cyclic voltammetry, steady state polarization and impedance spectroscopy. The results of all these techniques suggest that under anodic polarization, two parallel reactions take place. The first reaction is the oxygen evolution, giving rise to a steady state current under a constant applied potential. The other reaction is the oxygen storage (oxygen injection) in the form of Pt-O species. This second process gives rise to a time dependant current under a constant applied potential, and is therefore responsible for the pseudocapacitive behavior of the electrode. Moreover, linear sweep voltammetry measurements indicated that, by application of an anodic potential, at least three types of Pt-O species were stored, following distinct kinetics. Based on the amount of stored Pt-O and on the corresponding storage kinetics, they were attributed to three different locations on the electrode: 1) at the Pt/YSZ interface, 2) diffusing from the tpb toward the Pt/gas interface, 3) diffusing from the Pt/YSZ interface toward the bulk of the platinum electrode. It has been shown that the Pt film exhibited various activity states toward the catalytic oxidation of ethylene, depending on the oxygen species present at its surface. As evidenced by XPS measurements and in agreement with the thermodynamic data for the given system, the inactive (deactivated) state has been attributed to the formation of surface platinum oxide at T > 550°C. Decreasing the reaction temperature to 525°C caused the slow spontaneous reactivation of the catalyst and several days were necessary to reach the active state, where most of the catalyst was present in its metallic state. The catalyst activity recovery could be accelerated by the application of anodic potential pulses. In agreement with the mechanism of EPOC, this was explained by the oxide destabilizing effect of the anodically produced Oδ- species. Anodic polarization also caused reversible electrochemical promotion of catalysis at unusual high temperature (600°C). In addition, very intriguing catalytic relaxation transients were observed after prolonged anodic polarization times. Indeed, it was found that enhanced catalytic activity could be maintained for up to 10 hours after current interruption. Combination of these latter results, the related literature, the state of the art model of EPOC, and the results obtained by electrochemical techniques led to the proposition of an original model based on the processes of Pt-O storage/release at various locations of the O2(g),Pt/YSZ system. According to this model, anodic polarization produces Oδ- back-spillover species, promoting the catalytic activity, in agreement with the mechanism of EPOC. In parallel, hidden oxygen species are stored at the Pt/YSZ interface and diffuse toward the Pt phase. When the polarization is switched off, these hidden oxygen species diffuse to the gas-exposed surface and cause non-Faradaic promotion, as back-spillover Oδ- do. The large amount of stored charge and its slow diffusion controlled emergence causes the rate enhancement to last for hours.
