Multi-objective, multi-period optimization of district energy systems: IV – A case study

A multi-objective, multi-period model for optimizing the design and operating strategy of district energy systems is proposed by authors [1]. In the developed model the process and energy integration tech- niques are principally investigated. In the present work, a case study is discussed to demonstrate the proposed model. The results illustrate that by selecting the adequate resources, centralized and decen- tralized conversion technologies and distribution networks, the environmental impacts can be reduced down to 50e65% and the total annual costs down to 22e27%. In addition, 75% efficiency is obtained due to the integration of co-generation technologies, endogenous resources and the waste heat recovery.

Multi-objective, multi-period optimization of district energy systems: Networks design

Microalgae cultivation for biofuel conversion is widely treated in literature as it could allow reducing fossil fuel consumptions. One of the challenges of this technology is related to the high power and cost requirements for the harvesting and dewatering steps. The influence of dewatering process can be substantially reduced when considering hydrothermal gasification (HTG). This technology, which have already been demonstrated and tested, allows treating feedstock with more than 80% moisture content and can lead to high SNG conversion efficiencies. The object of this paper is to show the combination of microalgae growing and processing coupled with the HTG and syngas purification for SNG grid quality production. The productivity potential for this given technology is evaluated considering global solar radiation data available and the cultivation technology, which can be characterized by photosynthesis conversion efficiency. Systematic system design methodology followed by multi-objective optimization technique using evolutionary algorithms are carried out to provide a set of candidate solutions considering different configurations and conflictive objectives such as efficiency, cost and environmental impact. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

Geothermal Energy and Biomass Integration in Urban Systems: a Case Study

Heating, electricity and transportation are the three components of urban systems final energy consumption. Geothermal energy and biomass are two promising renewable energy resources that can be used for the production of heat, electricity and biofuels, thus allowing a reduction of fossil fuel consumption and of the associated greenhouse gas emissions. The goal of this paper is to assess the potential for the integration of geothermal energy combined with biomass in the energy system of a city, taking into account the consumption of fossil and renewable resources, costs and environmental impact. Several process options are available for both resources. For geothermal energy, deep aquifers and EGS (Enhanced Geothermal Systems) are considered, for both separate production of heat and electricity, and cogeneration. For biomass, besides the option of direct combustion, conversion to biofuels by a set of alternative processes (pyrolysis and gasification) is included in this study. The use of pinch analysis and optimization allows the evaluation of possible hybrid energy conversion systems integrating geothermal with biomass. The European city of Lausanne (Switzerland) is used as an example case study. The heat demand of the city is partially satisfied by a district heating network. The complete urban energy system is modeled in order to account for the potential competition and synergies between different energy carriers and technologies for the same end-uses. A set of “ad hoc” scenarios is developed with the goal of assessing the interest of geothermal and biomass within the long-term strategic energy planning of the city.
