(N)TM Onset by Central EC Power Deposition in FTU and TCV Tokamaks

Résumé

The presence in plasmas of conventional and neoclassical tearing modes is a key problem for the confinement. The investigation of their onset is still an open issue to avoid plasma degradation and possible disruptions. The destabilization of the modes by on-axis or nearly central EC power deposition is a field still not well understood and responses from devices with different shape and comparable size and operation parameters can give more information. D-shaped TCV and circular FTU plasmas show that the NTM onset/amplification are associated with direct effects of ECCD on the stability parameter Δ'0 with concomitant effects on rotation. An EC torque can affect the destabilization role of the ion polarization current. Calculations using transport codes yield small modifications of the plasma current density profile, however the effect on Δ'0 is hard to quantify given the dependence on d2q/dρ2. This is why experimental comparison is important.

In this thesis work, the flexibility of the Tokamak à Configuration Variable (TCV) is exploited to study the influence of plasma parameters on turbulent fluctuations. The correlation electron cyclotron emission (CECE) diagnostic is used to measure low amplitude, large bandwidth radiative temperature fluctuations, associated with the anomalous transport terms that constitute the largest contribution to heat and particle loss in tokamak plasmas. In a series of L-mode limited plasmas, fluctuations are characterized over a large range of plasma parameters, obtained varying collisionality, Te/Ti and plasma triangularity. The influence of negative triangularity on confinement and fluctuations is also investigated. Temperature fluctuations profiles have been measured in low density, ohmic, positive and negative triangularity discharges, with matched current and density profiles. Strong suppression of fluctuations is observed in negative triangularity discharges from the plasma edge to the plasma mid radius. This is despite triangularity quickly decreasing when moving away from the edge. The existence of a region of low stiffness at the plasma edge is postulated to be responsible for this. Negative triangularity is confirmed having beneficial effects on confinement and reducing fluctuations amplitude in regimes with high Te/Ti. The neutral beam injector (NBI) has been used on positive and negative triangularity discharges in order to study the effect of negative triangularity on plasmas where Te/Ti~1. This condition is of particular interest since future reactor-like tokamaks are expected to work with thermalized electrons and ions. A pair of discharges with positive and negative triangularity has been realized, where matched temperature profiles are attained with ~385 kW and ~145 kW of NBI power respectively for the two shapes. This is evidence of negative triangularity improving plasma confinement also in conditions of low Te/Ti. In these discharges, CECE measurements find suppressed fluctuations in the negative triangularity discharges. Linear, flux tube, gyrokinetic simulations show that, in the same plasmas, the dominant turbulent regime is a mix of ion temperature gradient (ITG) instabilities and trapped electron modes (TEM). This is different with respect to all previous works in TCV, in which no ion heating had been available and only pure TEM regimes were observed. The results of the linear simulations indicate that, also in this mixed turbolence regime, negative triangularity has a stabilizing effect on instabilities, more visible for radial positions closer to the plasma edge, where the magnitude of triangularity is higher. A database of fluctuations measurements has been constructed from a series of discharges with positive and negative triangularity covering a large range of plasma conditions, particularly focusing on the effects of different combinations of collisionality and the Te/Ti ratio. Collisionality is found to be the main parameter to control the relative suppression of fluctutations in negative triangularity plasmas. No direct effect of Te/Ti on the fluctuation amplitudes is observed in the explored parameter range. Measurements taken in positive and negative triangularity plasmas, with comparable conditions and matched normalized temperature scale lengths still show reduced fluctuation levels for negative triangularity, suggesting influence on the threshold gradients for the onset of fluctuations.

The role of the sheath in magnetized plasma turbulence and flows

Controlled nuclear fusion could provide our society with a clean, safe, and virtually inexhaustible source of electric power production. The tokamak has proven to be capable of producing large amounts of fusion reactions by confining magnetically the fusion fuel at sufficiently high density and temperature, thus in the plasma state. Because of turbulence, however, high temperature plasma reaches the outermost region of the tokamak, the Scrape-Off Layer (SOL), which features open magnetic field lines that channel particles and heat into a dedicated region of the vacuum vessel. The plasma dynamics in the SOL is crucial in determining the performance of tokamak devices, and constitutes one of the greatest uncertainties in the success of the fusion program. In the last few years, the development of numerical codes based on reduced fluid models has provided a tool to study turbulence in open field line configurations. In particular, the GBS (Global Braginskii Solver) code has been developed at CRPP and is used to perform global, three-dimensional, full-n, flux-driven simulations of plasma turbulence in open field lines. Reaching predictive capabilities is an outstanding challenge that involves a proper treatment of the plasma-wall interactions at the end of the field lines, to well describe the particle and energy losses. This involves the study of plasma sheaths, namely the layers forming at the interface between plasmas and solid surfaces, where the drift and quasineutrality approximations break down. This is an investigation of general interest, as sheaths are present in all laboratory plasmas. This thesis presents progress in the understanding of plasma sheaths and their coupling with the turbulence in the main plasma. A kinetic code is developed to study the magnetized plasma-wall transition region and derive a complete set of analytical boundary conditions that supply the sheath physics to fluid codes. These boundary conditions are implemented in the GBS code and simulations of SOL turbulence are carried out to investigate the importance of the sheath in determining the equilibrium electric fields, intrinsic toroidal rotation, and SOL width, in different limited configurations. For each study carried out in this thesis, simple analytical models are developed to interpret the simulation results and reveal the fundamental mechanisms underlying the system dynamics. The electrostatic potential appears to be determined by a combined effect of sheath physics and electron adiabaticity. Intrinsic flows are driven by the sheath, while turbulence provides the mechanism for radial momentum transport. The position of the limiter can modify the turbulence properties in the SOL, thus playing an important role in setting the SOL width.

Indirect measurement of poloidal rotation using inboard–outboard asymmetry of toroidal rotation and comparison with neoclassical predictions

An alternative experimental spectroscopic measurement of poloidal plasma rotation in toroidally confined plasmas is proven effective in the TCV tokamak. Charge exchange recombination measurements of the toroidal rotation profile over the full mid-plane plasma diameter are used to infer the complete bi-dimensional flow structure of the intrinsic C6+ impurity, which includes its poloidal component. For divergence free flows, the difference between the toroidal rotation frequency ft = ut/R at the inboard and outboard locations on the same flux surface is proportional to the poloidal rotation. This indirect measurement provides increased accuracy as the measured quantity ft,in − ft,out ≈ 4qup/Raxis (q is the local safety factor) is larger than the intrinsic uncertainties of a direct spectroscopic measurement of poloidal velocity. The method is applied in a variety of TCV ohmic and electron cyclotron heated L-mode plasmas in the banana-plateau collisionality regime (0.2 < ν∗ii < 2.4). In the radial range of normalized poloidal flux ρψ < 0.8, an impurity poloidal velocity of up = 0.5–2.5 kms−1 is observed, always in the electron diamagnetic drift direction.
