Highly dispersed iron oxide (Fe2O3) nanoparticles (NPs) have been immobilized on structured supports of activated carbon fibers (ACF). Systematic catalyst characterizations suggest that ACF-based catalysts remain ultra-microporous after Fe2O3 NPs (similar to 2 nm) deposition. The structured nano-catalysts show high activity and chemoselectivity in reduction of different functionalized nitroarenes to the corresponding anilines giving yields of the target products close to 100%. Electrochemical promotion of CO combustion over non-percolated Pt particles supported on YSZ using a novel bipolar configuration

The electrochemical promotion of CO combustion over nano-dispersed Platinum particles supported on yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) is investigated at 300 degrees C under high vacuum conditions. By polarizing the nanoparticles, we were able to enhance the reaction rate by a factor of 500. Charging the Pt clusters promotes the catalytic rate of CO combustion over the surface of the catalyst. The experimental facts prove that the catalytic activity of platinum nanoparticles can be electrochemically activated. Having a tuning capability on every nanoparticle rather than on a thin film opens new possibilities for the application of nano-dispersed catalysts in electrochemical promotion. The facile preparation of structured catalysts featuring highly-dispersed non-precious metal (Fe, Ni, Co) oxide nanoparticles stabilized within a super-microporous network of activated carbon fibres (ACF) is described. The catalyst morphology was controlled over multiple levels from the nano-designed active phase up to the macro-structure of the ACF support. A range of physicochemical techniques was used to characterize the catalyst and rationalize the catalytic data during chemoselective transfer hydrogenation of nitroarenes. The challenging reduction of m-nitrostyrene containing an easily reducible vinyl-group was obtained under mild conditions with a near-quantitative yield of m-vinylaniline using hydrazine hydrate as the reducing agent over CoOx/ACF as a structured catalyst. Reduction of nitrogen oxides by carbon monoxide over an iron oxide catalyst under dynamic conditions

Redn. of NO and N2O by CO over a SiO2-supported iron oxide catalyst was studied by the transient response method, with different initial oxidn. states of the catalyst, i.e., completely reduced (Fe3O4), or oxidized (Fe2O3). The affect of CO pre-adsorption was also studied. From the material balance on the gas-phase species, it was shown that the compn. of the catalyst changes during relaxation to steady-state. The degree of redn. of the catalyst at steady-state could thus be estd. During the transient period, CO was shown to inhibit N2O as well as NO redns. by adsorption on reduced sites. Activity of the reduced catalyst was substantially higher as compared to the oxidized catalyst for both reactions. On this basis, it was attempted to keep the catalyst in a reduced state by periodically reducing it with CO. As a result, a significant increase in reactor performance with respect to steady-state operation could be achieved for N2O redn. by CO. Finally, the dynamic behavior of the N2O-CO and NO-CO reactions made it possible to evidence reaction steps, the occurrence of which could not be shown during previous investigations on the sep. interactions of the reactants with the catalyst.
