CO2 induced phase transitions in diamine-appended metal-organic frameworks

Using a combination of density functional theory and lattice models, we study the effect of CO2 adsorption in an amine functionalized metal-organic framework. These materials exhibit a step in the adsorption isotherm indicative of a phase change. The pressure at which this step occurs is not only temperature dependent but is also metal center dependent. Likewise, the heats of adsorption vary depending on the metal center. Herein we demonstrate via quantum chemical calculations that the amines should not be considered firmly anchored to the framework and we explore the mechanism for CO2 adsorption. An ammonium carbamate species is formed via the insertion of CO2 into the M-Namine bonds. Furthermore, we translate the quantum chemical results into isotherms using a coarse grained Monte Carlo simulation technique and show that this adsorption mechanism can explain the characteristic step observed in the experimental isotherm while a previously proposed mechanism cannot. Furthermore, metal analogues have been explored and the CO2 binding energies show a strong metal dependence corresponding to the M-Namine bond strength. We show that this difference can be exploited to tune the pressure at which the step in the isotherm occurs. Additionally, the mmen-Ni-2(dobpdc) framework shows Langmuir like behavior, and our simulations show how this can be explained by competitive adsorption between the new model and a previously proposed model.

Computational Quantum Chemical Studies on Radicals

Radicals play an important role in many areas of chemistry, such as atmospheric, aquatic, polymer, and biological, to name a few. Radicals are often highly reactive species which are short-lived and therefore harder to study by experimental techniques. In principle, computational quantum chemistry enables the study of arbitrary chemical species, including elusive radicals. However, the approximate quantum chemical methods which are used for production simulations need to be validated for the type of problem in question. First, it is necessary to validate that highly accurate reference methods commonly applied to closed-shell systems are equally applicable to radicals. I show that the “gold standard” for closed-shell systems (coupled cluster with singles, doubles, and perturbative triples excitations (CCSD(T))) can produce molecular geometries and vibrational frequencies suitable for (sub-)kJ/mol thermochemistry for radical species as well. However, additional diagnosis is necessary, especially for vibrational frequency calculations. Coupled cluster methods are then used to compute benchmark binding energies between small radicals and water or hydrogen fluoride as a proxy to the aqueous condensed phase. I find that many common density functional theory (DFT) methods cannot reproduce these binding energies to within chemical accuracy (1 kcal/mol). However, some functionals, for example MPW1K and BHandHLYP, perform better than others. If more accurate ab initio methods are computationally too demanding for the system of interest, these DFT methods should be used for (micro-)solvated radicals. Complexes of radicals with polar solvent are found to be more strongly bound than expected. This can not be explained by dispersive and electrostatic interactions alone. Using natural bond orbitals, I show that additional donor-acceptor interactions may be responsible for the strong intermolecular binding observed. One of the most fundamental processes involving aqueous organic radicals is the one-electron oxidation of closed-shell organics. I study the vertical ionization of neutral organics. That is, the ionization is faster than the reorganization of the solvent (and solute), and the conformation is assumed to be unchanged during the ionization process. I find that the difference between the gas-phase and aqueous-phase vertical ionization energy, ∆VIE = VIEaq − VIEgas, ranges from ≈ 0 to -1.0 eV for small aromatic compounds. The differences in ∆VIE between different compounds seem to be caused by the solvent structures of the ≈ 70 water molecules closest to the solute. In natural surface waters, oxidized organics arise through the reaction of photochemically created radicals with organic molecules already present in the water column. One example for such a reaction is the oxidation of sulfonamide antibiotics. I show that upon oxidation of sulfadiazine and related compounds, an aniline radical cation is formed. The reactivity of this oxidized species is strikingly different from its reduced counterpart: the barrier for a nucleophilic attack on the aniline ring is drastically lowered, and a fast rearrangement reaction can take place. I demonstrate that current quantum chemical protocols are suitable for mechanistic studies of solvated radicals, and I successfully apply them to such problems. To achieve chemical accuracy for quantum computational protocols, further developments are necessary. To validate novel approaches, the benchmark data presented in this thesis may be used.

Ab Initio Derived Force Fields for Predicting CO2 Adsorption and Accessibility of Metal Sites in the Metal-Organic Frameworks M-MOF-74 (M = Mn, Co, Ni, Cu)

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are versatile nanoporous materials that have gained significant interest as low heat capacity, high selectivity sorbents for CO2 capture applications. Large-scale atomistic simulations for identifying high-performance MOFs are possible, but are limited to systems for which existing molecular mechanics force fields describe the interactions between the guest and framework atoms with sufficient accuracy. However, standard force fields are not applicable to cases involving coordinatively unsaturated metal centers that can strongly bind specific sorbate molecules. It has been previously shown that improved force fields can be derived from quantum mechanical calculations. In this work, we derived force fields for an isostructural series of MOFs, M-MOF-74, where M = Mn, Co, Ni, and Cu, from first principles. Monte Carlo calculations in the Gibbs ensemble were used to calculate the CO2 adsorption isotherms in order to assess the quality of the derived force field parameters and to determine a generally applicable procedure for obtaining a reliable force field for a targeted MOF and adsorbate system. The computed CO2 adsorption isotherms for the different M-MOF-74 members agree with experimental measurements at low loading and show that Ni-MOF-74 possesses the highest affinity toward CO2 and Cu-MOF-74 the weakest. In addition, we explored the source of open metal site and pore inaccessibility in these materials and quantified its impact on adsorption, especially the discrepancies often observed between experiments and simulations at high loadings.

Force Field Development from Periodic Density Functional Theory Calculations for Gas Separation Applications Using Metal-Organic Frameworks

We present accurate force fields developed from density functional theory (DFT) calculations with periodic boundary conditions for use in molecular simulations involving M-2(dobdc) (M-MOF-74; dobdc(4-) = 2,5-dioxidobenzenedicarboxylate; M = Mg, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Zn) and frameworks of similar topology. In these systems, conventional force fields fail to accurately model gas adsorption due to the strongly binding open-metal sites. The DFT-derived force fields predict the adsorption of CO2, H2O, and CH4 inside these frameworks much more accurately than other common force fields. We show that these force fields can also be used for M2(dobpdc) (dobpdc(4-) = 4,4'-dioxidobiphenyl-3,3'-dicarboxylate), an extended version of MOF-74, and thus are a promising alternative to common force fields for studying materials similar to MOF-74 for carbon capture applications. Furthermore, it is anticipated that the approach can be applied to other metal organic framework topologies to obtain force fields for different systems. We have used this force field to study the effect of contaminants such as H2O and N-2 upon these materials' performance for the separation of CO2 from the emissions of natural gas reservoirs and coal-fired power plants. Specifically, mixture adsorption isotherms calculated with these DFT-derived force fields showed a significant reduction in the uptake of many gas components in the presence of even trace amounts of H2O vapor. The extent to which the various gases are affected by the concentration of H2O in the reservoir is quantitatively different for the different frameworks and is related to their heats of adsorption. Additionally, significant increases in CO2 selectivities over CH4 and N2 are observed as the temperature of the systems is lowered.
