Hypermagnetic fields and baryon asymmetry from pseudoscalar inflation

Résumé

We show that maximally helical hypermagnetic fields produced during pseudoscalar inflation can generate the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe via the B + L anomaly in the Standard Model. We find that most of the parameter space of pseudoscalar inflation that explains the cosmological data leads to baryon overproduction; hence, the models of natural inflation are severely constrained. We also point out a connection between the baryon number and topology of the relic magnetic fields. Both the magnitude and sign of magnetic helicity can be detected in future diffuse gamma ray data. This could hint to a link between inflation and the baryon asymmetry of the Universe.

Asymmetric dark matter and baryogenesis from pseudoscalar inflation

We show that both the baryon asymmetry of the Universe and the dark matter abundance can be explained within a single framework that makes use of maximally helical hypermagnetic fields produced during pseudoscalar inflation and the chiral anomaly in the Standard Model. We consider a minimal asymmetric dark matter model free from anomalies and constraints. We find that the observed baryon and the dark matter abundances are achieved for a wide range of inflationary parameters, and the dark matter mass ranges between 7-15 GeV. The novelty of our mechanism stems from the fact that the same source of CP violation occurring during inflation explains both baryonic and dark matter in the Universe with two inflationary parameters, hence addressing all the initial condition problems in an economical way.

The extension of the Standard Model by right handed neutrinos with masses in the GeV range can simultaneously explain the observed neutrino masses via the seesaw mechanism and the baryon asymmetry of the universe via leptogenesis. It has previously been claimed that the requirement for successful baryogenesis implies that the rate of neutrinoless double beta decay in this scenario is always smaller than the standard prediction from light neutrino exchange alone. In contrast, we find that the rate for this process can also be enhanced due to a dominant contribution from heavy neutrino exchange. In a small part of the parameter space it even exceeds the current experimental limit, while the properties of the heavy neutrinos are consistent with all other experimental constraints and the observed baryon asymmetry is reproduced. This implies that neutrinoless double beta decay experiments have already started to rule out part of the leptogenesis parameter space that is not constrained by any other experiment, and the lepton number violation that is responsible for the origin of baryonic matter in the universe may be observed in the near future. Spontaneous baryogenesis from axions with generic couplings

Axion-like particles can source the baryon asymmetry of our Universe through spontaneous baryogenesis. Here we clarify that this is a generic outcome for essentially any coupling of an axion-like particle to the Standard Model, requiring only a non-zero velocity of the classical axion field while baryon or lepton number violating interactions are present in thermal bath. In particular, coupling the axions only to gluons is sufficient to generate a baryon asymmetry in the presence of electroweak sphalerons or the Weinberg operator. Deriving the transport equation for an arbitrary set of couplings of the axion-like particle, we provide a general framework in which these results can be obtained immediately. If all the operators involved are efficient, it suffices to solve an algebraic equation to obtain the final asymmetries. Otherwise one needs to solve a simple set of differential equations. This formalism clarifies some theoretical subtleties such as redundancies in the axion coupling to the Standard Model particles associated with a field rotation. We demonstrate how our formalism automatically evades potential pitfalls in the calculation of the final baryon asymmetry.
