Migration of cations induces reversible performance losses over day/night cycling in perovskite solar cells

Perovskites have been demonstrated in solar cells with a power conversion efficiency of well above 20%, which makes them one of the strongest contenders for next generation photovoltaics. While there are no concerns about their efficiency, very little is known about their stability under illumination and load. Ionic defects and their migration in the perovskite crystal lattice are some of the most alarming sources of degrdn., which can potentially prevent the commercialization of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In this work, we provide direct evidence of elec. field-induced ionic defect migration and we isolate their effect on the long-term performance of state-of-the-art devices. Supported by modeling, we demonstrate that ionic defects, migrating on timescales significantly longer (above 103 s) than what has so far been explored (from 10-1 to 102 s), abate the initial efficiency by 10-15% after several hours of operation at the max. power point. Though these losses are not negligible, we prove that the initial efficiency is fully recovered when leaving the device in the dark for a comparable amt. of time. We verified this behavior over several cycles resembling day/night phases, thus probing the stability of PSCs under native working conditions. This unusual behavior reveals that research and industrial stds. currently in use to assess the performance and the stability of solar cells need to be adjusted for PSCs. Our work paves the way for much needed new testing protocols and figures of merit specifically designed for PSCs.

Investigation on the impact of passivation in perovskite solar cells

Conversion of sunlight to electricity is the most plausible approach towards the generation of renewable energies. During recent decade lead halide perovskites (LHPs) have proven to be promising candidates for photovoltaic applications such as solar cells. LHPs can be made easily in laboratories around the world via solution process methods and many universities can afford to participate in their development. How-ever, LHPs suffer from instability issues and their efficiencies can be further improved. In this thesis, both instability and efficiency challenges are addressed. We showed by doping the precursor of methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) perovskite with a relatively large cation of 2-Choloroethylammonium (CLEA), perovskites films with CLEA incorporated into their structures are formed. The novel perovskite is able to withstand high temperatures as high as 80°C while achieving efficiencies > 19% in MAPbI3-based perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Various approaches have been employed for the passivation of the defects in perovskite solar cells Vari-ous approaches have been employed to passivate the defects in perovskite films used in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, the passivation mechanism is often unclear at a molecular level and the reason for enhanced PSC performance remains elusive. Here, we describe passivation based on the deposition of two dimensional (2D) perovskites (obtained from para-halophenylethylammonium iodide) on the surface of perovskite films. Moreover, the mechanism of passivation was elucidated and was traced to the high work function of the 2D perovskites, which induce band-bending at the surface of perovskite film and therefore reduces the charge carrier recombination at the interface of perovskite and the hole transporting material (HTM). Efficiencies >22% with average voltages >1.15 V were achieved using a typical mesoporous-TiO2 and Spiro-OMeTAD device configuration. This study paves the way for PSCs efficiency improvement by rational design. The employment of 2D perovskites is a promising approach to tackle the stability and voltage issues inherent in perovskite solar cells. It remains unclear however whether other perovskites with different dimensionalities have the same effect on efficiency and stability. Here, we report the use of quasi-3D azetidinium lead iodide (AzPbI3) as a secondary layer on top of the primary 3D perovskite film that results in significant improvements in the photovoltaic parameters. Remarkably, utilization of AzPbI3 leads to the passivation resulting in a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 22.4 %. The open-circuit voltage obtained is as high as 1.18 V, which is among the highest reported to date for single-junction perovskite solar cells, corresponding to a voltage deficit of 0.37 V for a bandgap of 1.55 eV. Studying the compositional instability of mixed ion perovskites under light illumination is important to understand the mechanisms underlying their efficiency and stability. However, current techniques are limited in resolution and are unable to deconvolute minor ion migration phenomena. Here, we describe a method that enables ion migration to be studied allowing different segregation mechanisms to be elucidated. We applied statistical analysis to cathodoluminescence data to generate compositional distribution histograms. Charge collection and pore filling in solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells

The solar to electrical power conversion efficiency for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) incorporating a solid-state organic hole-transporter can be over 5%. However, this is for devices significantly thinner than the optical depth of the active composites and by comparison to the liquid electrolyte based DSCs, which exhibit efficiencies in excess of 10%, more than doubling of this efficiency is clearly attainable if all the steps in the photovoltaic process can be optimized. Two issues are currently being addressed by the field. The first aims at enhancing the electron diffusion length by either reducing the charge recombination or enhancing the charge transport rates. This should enable a larger fraction of photogenerated charges to be collected. The second, though less actively investigated, aims to improve the physical composite formation, which in this instance is the infiltration of mesoporous TiO2 with the organic hole-transporter 2,2',7,7'-tetrakis(N,N-di-p-methoxypheny-amine)-9,9'-spirobifluorene (spiro-MeOTAD). Here, we perform a broad experimental study to elucidate the limiting factors to the solar cell performance. We first investigate the charge transport and recombination in the solid-state dye-sensitized solar cell under realistic working conditions via small perturbation photovoltage and photocurrent decay measurements. From these measurements we deduce that the electron diffusion length near short-circuit is as long as 20 µm. However, at applied biases approaching open-circuit potential under realistic solar conditions, the diffusion length becomes comparable with the film thickness, ~2 µm, illustrating that real losses to open-circuit voltage, fill factor and hence efficiency are occurring due to ineffective charge collection. The long diffusion length near short-circuit, on the other hand, illustrates that another process, separate from ineffective charge collection, is rendering the solar cell less than ideal. We investigate the process of TiO2 mesopore infiltration with spiro-MeOTAD by examining the cross-sectional images of and performing photo-induced absorption spectroscopy on devices with a range of thickness, infiltrated with spiro-MeOTAD with a range of concentrations. We present our interpretation of the mechanism for material infiltration, and by improving the casting conditions demonstrate efficient charge collection through devices of over 7 µm in thickness. This investigation represents an improvement in our understanding of the limiting factors to the dye-sensitized solar cell. However, much work, focused on composite formation and improved kinetic competition, is required to realize the true potential of this concept.
