Transition of a South African sugar mill towards a biorefinery. A feasibility assessment

The survival of the sugar industry in South Africa is under threat due to an unstable and low sugar price, high production cost and old infrastructure. At present, coal and sugarcane bagasse are used as fuels in an inefficient boiler to generate the heat and electricity required by the plant. Moreover, the residues produced during the sugarcane agriculture stage are burnt in the field causing serious concerns in the nearby rural areas. The progress in the conversion of lignocellulosic residues to valuable chemicals in the South African sugar mills would bring benefits in sustainability and both rural and industrial economic development. Sugarcane bagasse and green harvesting residues are the largest lignocellulosic wastes in the production of sugar from sugar cane. They are seen as promising feedstock to improve the long-term sustainability of the local sugar mill. Integrated biorefinery-sugar mill scenarios using sugarcane harvesting residues, bagasse and molasses as feedstock to co-produce chemicals and electricity are evaluated in this work for the first time. The integration of plants was designed in a way to provide both economic and environmental benefits. The following lignocellulOse biorefineries were simulated in Aspen Plus V8.8: (SM LE) Co-production of sugar and lactic acid, and (SM LF) co-production of sugar, lactic acid, and furfural. Surplus power was produced in both scenarios for export. Both scenarios were simulated based on literature and experiment data presented in this work. Experiments were conducted on the bagasse pretreatment using dilute acid, and the conversion of hemicellulose into furfural product. The results of techno-economic assessment showed that both scenarios are economically feasible under the considered conditions and provide strong economic benefits in comparison with an existing sugar mill. Among the biorefinery scenarios, the SM LF scenario has better economic performance than SM LE. In terms of environmental assessment, both scenarios demonstrate a significant reduction in climate change, fossil fuel depletion, freshwater ecotoxicity and eutrophication and human toxicity impacts in the South African context. In a nutshell, biorefineries demonstrate potential to be a feasible and more sustainable alternative to the existing sugar mills in the South African context.

Development and application of a numerical simulation system to evaluate the impact of anthropogenic heat fluxes on urban boundary layer climate

Increasing economic development, and growing population, generated during the last decades a very important growth of cities. Urban regions include nowadays more than half of the global population and, by 2030, this proportion is forecasted to increase to three quarters. A consequent more and more extensive use of natural resources, together with increasing anthropogenic activities such as emissions from traffic and factories, or heating from air-conditioning facilities, modify local climate in many different ways, leading to a progressive degradation of life quality in urban areas. Taking these facts into account, there is nowadays a real need for efficient urban planning guidelines and sustainability policies in order to improve life quality in urban areas. Different points should be considered including urban warming, air pollution, human health, economic, and cooling energy needs. The present work goes in this direction, aiming at developing a simulation system for the study of the complex interactions between buildings and the atmosphere. The system of equations describing atmospheric flows is highly non linear and it is common to employ numerical techniques in order to solve them. Moreover, the representation of urban canopy climate, and related air pollution problems, requiree taking the interaction between urban scale (tens of kilometers), and mesoscale (hundreds of kilometers) processes into account. At first, starting from previous studies, a mesoscale meteorological model has been developed as part of this work. Urban induced processes have been considered by implementing inside the model a detailed urban parameterization scheme developed in a previous work. The scheme is able to capture different urban processes, and reproduces the effects of cities in a more accurate way than traditional methods usually used in mesoscale models. However, the heat generated in buildings, and the way this heat is exchanged with the exterior, was not explicitly resolved. In particular, recent studies indicated that anthropogenic heat from air-conditioning facilities can play an important role and should be taken into account for more complete urban climate studies. To this purpose, a Building Energy Model (BEM) has been developed, and coupled to the Urban Canopy Parameterisation (UCP). This building model takes into account the diffusion of heat through walls, roofs, and floors, the natural ventilation, the generation of heat from occupants and equipments, and the consumption of energy through air conditioning systems. Comparisons with other programs indicate that BEM is able to accurately simulate the basic heat transfer phenomena, and to reproduce the heat fluxes exchanged between buildings and the atmosphere. In a second part of the work, the simulation system composed by the Mesoscale Model (MM), UCP, and BEM is tested with respect to one, and two-dimensional configurations. In particular, the impact of BEM on the meteorological variables is analyzed, as well as the efficiency of different urban warming countermeasures, and cooling energy demands control strategies. Two-dimensional results are then utilized as guidance for the application of MM-UCP-BEM over the realistic configuration including the city of Basel and the surrounding areas. At first, comparisons of urban and rural simulated temperatures with measures provided by the BUBBLE project (Basel Urban Boundary Layer Experiment), have shown that the model could reasonably well reproduce the variations in outdoor air temperature. In a second time, the simulations considered for the two-dimensional configuration are applied to the case of Basel. Numerical results confirm that anthropogenic fluxes from air-conditioning facilities can have a non negligent impact on the urban meteorology. Typically, they modify the outdoor temperature and increase the Urban Heat Island (UHI) phenomenon. In the last part of the study, the applicability of the model in performing urban warming countermeasures, and cooling energy demands control strategies, is evaluated. In this purpose in mind, a sensitivity analysis is carried out indicating that appropriate physical properties of built materials, efficient air-conditioning systems, and the application of simple energy saving policies, can lead to very important cooling energy savings. In general, the application of BEM inside the UCP allows computing the heat released into the atmosphere by air-conditioning facilities, as well as the corresponding feedbacks produced on the different meteorological variables. It also increases the capability of the urban parameterisation to provide more detailed studies of urban warming countermeasures, and cooling energy demands in real cities.

Methodology for the identification of promising integrated biorefineries

Steady increase in global energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and depletion of fossil energy resources, together with increased attention towards sustainable development has prompted researchers to discover economical and environmentally competitive non-petroleum alternatives and biomass is considered to be one of the most promising renewable sources of energy and carbon of this matter to address the aforementioned issues within a biorefinery platform. A biorefinery is an integrated processing facility that converts biomass into transportation fuels, value-added chemicals, heat, and electricity via biochemical and thermochemical conversion routes. Integrated biorefineries are capable of mimicking petroleum refineries via application of advanced process synthesis methods including modeling, simulation, integration and optimization techniques. This thesis presents a comprehensive synthesis methodology for the integration of bioprocessing technologies in biorefineries by addressing techno-economic and environmental sustainability analysis. The proposed systematic design approach combines advanced process modeling approaches, process integration techniques, and multi-objective optimization algorithms to assess the performance of the overall system with respect to economic, environmental, and energetic indicators. The design strategy is applied based on different case studies. Results indicate that multi-product processes can yield significant cost and environmental benefits. Additionally, the integration of biochemical and catalytic processes with thermochemical conversion pathways results in increased carbon efficiency and economic and environmental competitiveness. Synergies between biorefineries and energy system are assessed by integrating industrial plants with a cogeneration system producing biofuels and process heat. In doing so, system efficiency is increased by coupling the proposed cogeneration system with carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) and power-to-gas technologies to store the renewable intermittent electricity in the form of biofuels. The results exhibit that through system expansion, integrated biorefinery systems allow us to imitate fossil refineries with a large spectrum of bio-based products. This further increases the resource efficiency while offering a promising solution to mitigate CO2 emissions and hence reaching the longer-term decarbonization target set by the Paris Agreement.

Conversion of vine shoots into bioethanol and chemicals: Prospective LCA of biorefinery concept

Vine shoots are the viticulture residues generated in high quantities after the grapevine pruning. They are lignocellulosic material poorly exploited as feedstock. These wastes are often dumped in the agriculture fields or burnt. Due to their availability and relatively low price, vine shoots are considered as potential feedstock for biochemical conversion into value-added products. In this work, two biorefinery scenarios using vine shoots as feedstock to co-produce chemicals are assessed from an environmental point of view: production of lactic acid, and co-production of lactic acid and furfural. A CHP area was considered to be annexed to the plants to produce heat and electricity for internal use. The Aspen Plus and SimaPro commercial software were used to perform the LCA of the selected scenarios. The assessed scenarios demonstrate significant reductions in climate change, fossil fuel depletion, freshwater ecotoxicity and eutrophication and human toxicity impacts compared to their counterfactual systems.
