A comprehensive framework for visual quality assessment of light field tensor displays

In recent years, light field technology has attracted the interest of academia and industry, thanks to the possibility of rendering 3D scenes in a more realistic and immersive way. In particular, light field displays have been consistently investigated for their ability to offer a glass-free 3D viewing experience. Among others, tensor displays represent a promising way to render light field contents. However, only a few prototypes of such type of displays have been implemented and are available to the scientific community. As a direct consequence, the visual quality of such displays has not been rigorously investigated. In this paper, we propose a new framework to assess the visual quality of light field tensor displays on conventional 2D screens. The multilayer components of the tensor displays are virtually rendered on a typical 2D monitor through the use of a GUI, and different viewing angles can be accessed by simple mouse interactions. Both single and double stimulus methodologies for subjective quality assessment of light field contents are supported in this framework, while the total time of interaction is recorded for every stimulus. Results obtained in two different laboratory settings demonstrate that the framework can be successfully used to perform subjective quality assessment of different compression solutions for light field tensor displays.

Plenoptic content is becoming increasingly popular thanks to the availability of acquisition and display devices. Thanks to image-based rendering techniques, a plenoptic content can be rendered in real time in an interactive manner allowing virtual navigation through the captured scenes. This way of content consumption enables new experiences, and therefore introduces several challenges in terms of plenoptic data processing, transmission and consequently visual quality evaluation. In this paper, we propose a new methodology to subjectively assess the visual quality of plenoptic content. We also introduce a prototype software to perform subjective quality assessment according to the proposed methodology. The proposed methodology is further applied to assess the visual quality of a light field compression algorithm. Results show that this methodology can be successfully used to assess the visual quality of plenoptic content.

The recent advances in light field imaging are changing the way in which visual content is captured, processed and consumed. Storage and delivery systems for light field images rely on efficient compression algorithms. Such algorithms must additionally take into account the feature-rich rendering for light field content. Therefore, a proper evaluation of visual quality is essential to design and improve coding solutions for light field content. Consequently, the design of subjective tests should also reflect the light field rendering process. This paper aims at presenting and comparing two methodologies to assess the quality of experience in light field imaging. The first methodology uses an interactive approach, allowing subjects to engage with the light field content when assessing it. The second, on the other hand, is completely passive to ensure all the subjects will have the same experience. Advantages and drawbacks of each approach are compared by relying on statistical analysis of results and conclusions are drawn. The obtained results provide useful insights for future design of evaluation techniques for light field content.

Rendering-dependent compression and quality evaluation for light field contents

Light field representation promises to overcome the limitations of stereoscopic representation by allowing for a more seamless transition between multiple points of views, thus giving a more faithful representation of 3D scenes. However, in order to take full advantage of such contents, there is a need for light field displays on which the data can be natively visualized. Assessing the visual quality of light field contents on native light field display is of extreme importance in future development of both new rendering methods, as well as new compression solutions. However, the limited availability of light field displays restricts the possibility of using them to carry out subjective tests. Moreover, hardware limitations in prototype models may lessen considerably the perceptual quality of experience in consuming light field contents. In this paper, we compare three different compression approaches for multi-layer displays, through both objective quality metrics and subjective quality assessment. Furthermore, we analyze the results obtained through subjective tests conducted using a prototype multi-layer display, and a recently-proposed framework to conduct quality assessment of light field contents rendered through a tensor display simulator in 2D screens. Using statistical tools, we assess the correlation among the two settings and we draw useful conclusions for future design of compression solutions and subjective tests for light field contents with multi-layer rendering.
