Additives: Their Influence on the Humidity- and Pressure-Induced Crystallization of Amorphous CaCO3

Nature possesses a unique control over the formation of CaCO3 crystals that imparts fascinating mechanical properties to many CaCO3-based biomaterials. This high level of control is, at least in part, achieved through the use of certain soluble additives that influence the crystallization of amorphous CaCO3 (ACC). Inspired by nature, excellent work has been performed to elucidate the influence of additives on the crystallization of ACC that is dispersed in bulk aqueous solutions or subjected to elevated temperatures. By contrast, very little is known about the influence of additives on the crystallization of ACC when exposed to a humid environment or elevated pressures. This incomplete understanding restricts the range of properties that can be obtained in synthetic CaCO3-based biomaterials. To address this shortcoming, we study the influence of additives on the humidity- and pressure-induced crystallization of ACC. We find that the humidity-induced crystallization of ACC follows a distinctly different pathway than the pressure-induced one. As a result, the influence of additives on the crystallization kinetics of ACC, and hence, the size, morphology, structure, and orientation of the resulting CaCO3 crystals, differs considerably. These insights offer new opportunities to design CaCO3-based biomaterials whose mechanical properties more closely resemble natural ones.

Water: its influence on the formation and crystallization of amorphous calcium carbonate

Nature produces CaCO3-based materials that display fascinating mechanical properties. These properties are a result of the exquisite control over the formation of CaCO3 crystals that nature possesses. Such a high level of control is likely achieved, at least in parts, by controlling the crystallization of CaCO3 via a transient phase, amorphous CaCO3 (ACC), with certain soluble additives and insoluble organic scaffolds present in living organisms. Inspired by the excellent properties of natural CaCO3-based materials, a lot of research has been devoted to the fabrication of synthetic counterparts with similar properties. Yet, we are far from obtaining the same degree of control over the properties of these synthetic materials. A contributing reason for this inferior control is our incomplete understanding of the influence of the processing conditions, soluble additives, and insoluble scaffolds on the formation of CaCO3 and thereby the composition, structure and properties of resulting materials. This thesis is devoted to gaining a better understanding of the early stages of the CaCO3 formation. To achieve this goal, we introduce a new, organic solvent-free method to quench this process with a high temporal resolution. We produce ACC particles using a microfluidic spray-dryer and characterize them with different techniques. This method allows us to demonstrate that the amount of mobile water contained in ACC particles increases during their growth. As a result of the higher amount of mobile water, larger particles display a lower kinetic stability against the temperature-induced crystallization than smaller counterparts. We also reveal that certain additives reduce the amount of mobile water contained in ACC particles, thereby increasing their kinetic stability if exposed to elevated temperatures. To study the influence of additives on the kinetic stability of ACC against crystallization in more detail, we expose ACC particles functionalized with different additives to a humid environment or elevated pressures. We monitor the evolution of the structure and degree of hydration of these ACC particles during their crystallization. We show that the humidity-induced crystallization of ACC follows a distinctly different pathway than the pressure-induced one. In both pathways, the amount of water and its mobility that depends on its interaction strength with additives can influence the crystallization kinetics of ACC. The resulting CaCO3 crystals display a difference in their size, morphology, orientation, and structure. To process ACC particles into bulk CaCO3-based materials that possess similar mechanical properties to natural ones, insoluble organic scaffolds that offer a control over the local composition and structures of these materials across multiple length scales are typically required. To open up new possibilities of achieving this goal, we develop a new method to fabricate two dimensional (2D) structured hydrogel sheets. These 2D structured hydrogel sheets are composed of self-assembled, crosslinked hexagonal prismatic hydrogel particles. Using this method, we can vary the microscale structure and composition of these hydrogel sheets with the size, composition and arrangement of individual particles, their surface morphology with the polymerization conditions, and their mechanical properties with the crosslink density.

High-confinement mode (H-mode) is a promising reference scenario for ITER. But we are still facing major issues because of instabilities. They expel periodically some of the energy, which can damage the device. These instabilities are called the edge localized modes (ELM) and are not yet fully theoretically understood. The present work is a study on the profiles evolution in between ELMs and on the ELM effects. This may help to have a better understanding of the conditions before the ELM. We use the simulations as theoretical tool. For the purpose of the simulations, we build an H-mode χ e profile according to a standard L-mode one that we truncate at the edge to create a transport barrier. This gives a good agreement with the experimental data. Several scaling laws were successfully used. The first one is the energy confinement time scaling which was used for the thermal diffusivity to scale the temperature profile. A scaling between the core and pedestal energies was found recently. It was used to compute the pedestal χ e to scale the temperature pedestal, which was successful. Finally, we used a scaling for transport barriers which links the density gradient length to that of the temperature to compute the density in the pedestal. It was already found to be good in TCV electron internal transport barriers and in ASDEX Upgrade H-mode pedestals. Looking at the MHD stability parameters, it was found that for our reference case, ELMs are not likely to be triggered by the time evolution of the pressure gradient and the current density profiles in our model, as these are only varying significantly during the first millisecond after the crash, and are almost constant during the long remaining time until the next crash. Studying different cases, we investigate the behavior of the plasma when replacing the edge heating by central one to observe the influence of the heating profile, but no significant difference was found, neither in the MHD stability parameters. Further we change the particle diffusion coefficient to compare the dynamic behavior of the density. Slowing down the density dynamic behavior also slows down the pressure one, this can be seen on the MHD stability parameters. We also vary the ELM period to compare to the change due to the variation of the particle diffusivity. It was found that there may be a sort of relation between the particle diffusivity and the ELM period at least for the density, since both cases change the density recovery time with respect to the ELM period. A last case considered is doubling the radial ELM interaction range. This is done in order to observe the difference to the reference simulation that takes the density top of pedestal as ELM range, and to compare the spatial range influenced by the MHD activity and the one by the transport improvement. It was found that the MHD stability parameters in the pedestal exhibit a different behavior with the pressure gradient starting to increase very fast.

Temperature- and pressure-dependence of the hydrogen bond network in plastic ice VII

We model, via classical molecular dynamics simulations, the plastic phase of ice VII across a wide range of the phase diagram of interest for planetary investigations. Although structural and dynamical properties of plastic ice VII are mostly independent on the thermodynamic conditions, the hydrogen bond network (HBN) acquires a diverse spectrum of topologies distinctly different from that of liquid water and of ice VII simulated at the same pressure. We observe that the HBN topology of plastic ice carries some degree of similarity with the crystal phase, stronger at thermodynamic conditions proximal to ice VII, and gradually lessening when approaching the liquid state. Our results enrich our understanding of the properties of water at high pressure and high temperature and may help in rationalizing the geology of water-rich planets.
