In-situ experimental benchmarking of solid oxide fuel cell metal interconnect solutions

The progress in the diffusion of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) as commercial devices is not paired by literature production. Articles describing the behaviour of SOFC stacks are rare because of confidentiality reasons for commercial suppliers while research centres prefer to focus on single components or low technology readiness level research. This article aim to fill this gap presenting the analysis of three short stacks run in operative conditions for 10 000 h each. The stacks are characterized through voltage vs time curves, electron microscopy, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Focus is given on the interconnect; notably on the different types of coatings, varying for composition (MnCo2O4, MnCo1.8Fe0.2O4) and deposition technique (atmospheric plasma spray-APS, physical vapour deposition-PVD, wet powder spraying-WPS). Nitriding of the steel substrate as a solution to improve the chromium retention properties is tested as well.

Pure Magneli Ti4O7 nanotube arrays (NTA) were successfully fabricated by reducing TiO2 NTA with hydrogen at 850 degrees C for 30 minutes. The microstructure, composition and electrochemical behavior of the prepared Ti4O7 NTA were characterized by means of X-ray Diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, Cyclic Voltammetry and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy. The as-prepared Ti4O7 NTA had a highly-ordered tubular structure with high crystallinity, large electrochemical window of water electrolysis (2.4 V vs. Ag/AgCl, pH = 6.0) and low interfacial charge transfer resistance when they were employed as anode for electro-oxidation. Phenol was electro-oxidized on Ti4O7 particles and Ti4O7 NTA with the latter giving 20% more Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) removal. Pure Ti4O7 NTA also displayed larger degradation coefficient as well as higher COD removal and current efficiency than Boron-doped Diamond and other types of Magneli NTAs. Cathodic polarization was found to be an effective way of restoring the electrochemical performance of oxidized Ti4O7 NTA as an anode. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The performance of materials for electrochemical energy conversion and storage depends upon the number of electrocatalytic sites available for reaction and their accessibility by the transport of reactants and products. For solid oxide fuel/electrolysis cell materials, standard 3-D measurements such as connected triple-phase boundary (TPB) length and effective transport properties partially inform on how local geometry and network topology causes variability in TPB accessibility. A new measurement, the accessible TPB, is proposed to quantify these effects in detail and characterize material performance. The approach probes the reticulated pathways to each TPB using an analytical electrochemical fin model applied to a 3-D discrete representation of the heterogeneous structure provided by skeleton based partitioning. The method is tested on artificial and real structures imaged by 3-D x-ray and electron microscopy. The accessible TPB is not uniform and the pattern varies depending upon the structure. Connected TPBs can be even passivated. The sensitivity to manipulations of the local 3-D geometry and topology that standard measurements cannot capture is demonstrated. The clear presence of preferential pathways showcases a non-uniform utilization of the 3-D structure that potentially affects the performance and the resilience to alterations due to degradation phenomena. The concepts presented also apply to electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices such as other types of fuel cells, electrolyzers, batteries and capacitors. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. Analysis of High Temperature Degradation of Alloys in Solid Oxide Fuel Cell

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are approaching commercialization to improve power production efficiency. Currently, cost and lifetime reliability limit their spread in the market. The SOFC is ceramic-based, but refractory metal alloys are in fact the majority materials present in SOFC systems. The lifetime behaviour of SOFC stacks, and of the metallic components in particular, remain in need of further investigation. The degradation processes behind the possible failure of selected metal interconnect (MIC) and balance of plant (BoP) alloys were investigated. Samples were extracted from stacks operated for periods up to 18000 hours and analysed with scanning electron microscopy coupled with X-ray energy dispersion spectroscopy (SEM/EDS). Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) coupled with EDS and electron diffraction was applied to identify corrosion products. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis completed the characterization of the stacks. Degradation processes of steam generator BoP alloy were investigated with SEM/EDS as well. Various protective coating solutions to limit interconnect and related cathode degradation were tested as small coupon samples. Area specific resistance (ASR) monitoring and evaluation of Cr evaporation blocking verified the effectiveness of these solutions. A special set-up able to test 8 small MIC samples simultaneously in different gas atmospheres was built and used to correlate operating variables to material degradation through a design of experiment (DoE) approach. The results indicate that in commercial ferritic stainless steel, corrosion kinetics are fast in the first few thousand hours of operation and then tend to stabilize. The main influencing parameter is the initial density of the protective coating, independently of the steel and coating compositions. However, even porous coatings demonstrated to be viable for periods at least up to 2 years. The strong chemical interaction with the cell materials is their main drawback, but they present a competitive advantage in manufacturing cost. The steam generator alloy used in the BoP suffered stress corrosion cracking induced by the strong thermal gradient between hot and cold gas and the aggressive hot outlet gas atmosphere. Aluminizing treatment of the alloy seems to solve the issue.
