Modeling Current Transients in a Reciprocal Motion Tribocorrosion Experiment

Tribocorrosion of passivating metals is a dynamic phenomenon causing degradation of materials by a combination of mechanical wear and electrochemical dissolution. The mechanical action typically produces a local removal of particles, metal as well as oxides, resulting in an exposure of the metal surface and is followed by a repassivation process, of which the time-dependent current response is a direct measure. Kinetics for interface-limited film growth were used to find an analytical expression for the current transients, including the conductivity of the electrolyte as well as the contribution from the confined geometry within the mechanical contact. The solution gave a good experimental fit to a series of experiments with a range of electrolyte conductivities, and also to correlate well with values obtained using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Parameters from the rubbing experiment were used to calculate curves that compared well with passivation transients recorded on a bare metal surface for the same electrolyte series. The evaluation procedure made it possible to assess the relative resistance contributions from the growing passive film, the confined mechanical contact geometry, and the electrolyte.

The chemical and electrochemical promotion of highly dispersed nanofilm Rh catalysts (dispersion: about 10 %, film thickness: 40 nm) has been investigated for the first time. To this end Rh metal was sputter-deposited, either on a purely ionic conductor (8 % Y2O3-stabilized ZrO2) or on a mixed ionic-electronic conductor (TiO2), the latter being a highly dispersed layer of TiO2 (4 µm) deposited on YSZ. These catalysts are designated as Rh/YSZ and Rh/TiO2/YSZ, respectively. It was established analytically that both in the Rh/YSZ and in the Rh/TiO2/YSZ system, the catalyst films have a nanoparticle-size grain structure. The Rh supported on titania is rather porous, exhibiting a higher dispersion and surface area than Rh on YSZ. Both after reduction (H2, T=400 °C) and after oxidation (O2, T=400 °C), Rh supported on TiO2 was found to be in a more highly reduced state than Rh on YSZ. After reducing treatment, the Rh/TiO2/YSZ samples contain a larger amount of weakly bonded oxygen, which can be attributed to oxygen "backspillover" from the TiO2. A major feature of this research was the electrochemical characterization of the oxygen/Rh/solid electrolyte three-phase boundary by steady-state polarization measurements and by impedance spectroscopy. These are powerful techniques for extracting experimental trends and details that are useful for an understanding of the electrochemical promotion principles. It was shown that the exchange current densities at the Rh/solid electrolyte interface are lower on account of the TiO2 layer. The exchange current densities are more than twice lower at Rh/TiO2(4 µm)/YSZ than at Rh/YSZ, demonstrating that the former interface is much more polarizable. The mechanism of oxygen exchange occurring close to equilibrium (O2/O2- couple) was investigated for the first time at Rh catalyst electrodes interfaced with solid electrolyte. The processes of cathodic oxygen reduction and anodic oxygen evolution are not symmetric, but they are similar in the two systems, Rh/YSZ and Rh/TiO2(4 µm)/YSZ. The cathodic process consists of three steps: dissociative adsorption of oxygen at the gas-exposed Rh surface, atomic oxygen diffusion to the electrochemical reaction sites (ERS), and a two-electron transfer to this oxygen on the ERS. The cathodic process is limited by interfacial diffusion of oxygen atoms from the gas-exposed metal surface to the ERS. The anodic process includes two steps: two-electron transfer reaction, which is the rate-determining step, and oxygen desorption to the gas phase. With data obtained from impedance spectroscopy at the equilibrium potential, it was possible to confirm the reaction scheme proposed. It was demonstrated that Rh nanofilm catalysts interfaced with YSZ or TiO2/YSZ can be electrochemically promoted for the reaction of ethylene oxidation. Small anodic currents cause periodic oscillations in catalytic rate and potential of the Rh/YSZ catalyst, while at Rh/TiO2/YSZ they give rise to a stable and reversible rate enhancement by up to a factor 80. The increase in ethylene oxidation rate is up to 2000 times larger than the electrochemical rate, I/2F, of O2- oxidation. The pronounced electrochemical promotion behavior that has been observed is due to the anodically controlled migration of O2- species from the electrolyte to the Rh/gas interface. At the Rh surface, these species destabilize the formation of rhodium surface oxide (Rh2O3). The existence of backspillover oxygen species has been confirmed by impedance measurements under positive applied potential. Another significant result for heterogeneous catalysis is the finding that thick as well as thin films of Rh/TiO2/YSZ catalyst are open to chemical promotion of ethylene oxidation and partial methane oxidation, ie, they offer a higher catalytic activity and stability than the Rh/YSZ catalysts. The modification of catalytic activity observed for Rh/TiO2/YSZ was attributed to either a "long-range" electronic-type SMSI mechanism or to a self-driven electrochemical promotion mechanism. In both cases, the ultimate cause of promotion are different work functions of catalyst and support. Equilibration of the work functions of two solids in contact induces surface charging, a migration of O2- ions to the catalyst/gas interface, and a weakening of the Rh-O chemisorptive bonds. It facilitates reduction of oxidized surface sites. Another important achievement of the present work was that of exploring and confirming the possibilities of current-assisted activation of Rh/TiO2/YSZ catalysts. In partial methane oxidation using close to stoichiometric gas compositions (CH4 : O2 = 2 : 1) at 550 °C, the inactive (oxidized) Rh/TiO2/YSZ catalyst was successfully activated by applied currents, either positive or negative. This phenomenon is an example of "permanent" electrochemical promotion furnishing a permanent rate enhancement ratio of γ = 11. The activation by negative currents is explained in terms of an electrochemical reduction of rhodium surface oxide, while the activation by positive currents can be explained by the mechanism of electrochemical promotion.

The chemical-mechanical polishing process (CMP) is an essential part of the production of integrated circuits. Metal to be polished in the CMP reacts with the oxidants from the aqueous suspension (slurry) and the passive film is formed on the metal surface. Suspended abrasive nano particles from the slurry cause detachment of the formed friable passive films. The CMP represents the tribocorrosion process where material deterioration results from the interaction of wear and corrosion which takes place in tribological contact exposed to an aggressive environment. Due to increasing number of the materials to be polished in the modern integrated circuits it is necessary to gather fundamental understanding of the removal mechanism of each material. The aim of this work is to elucidate the removal mechanisms of tungsten (W), as a typical microelectronic metal (chosen as a model system), under different oxidising conditions (represented by electrochemically imposed potential). Also, we want to evaluate the effect of the slurry composition (chelating agents lactic and phosphoric acid) on material removal. To achieve this electrochemical techniques (chrono amperometry, cyclic voltametry, passivation kinetics measurements under mass transport control), and tribocorrosion techniques (tests on tribometer with electrochemical cell with reciprocating sliding motion of alumina ball) were used. Surface analysis techniques (SEM, XPS, AES) were used to assess worn and unworn surfaces' morphology and chemistry. In addition, electrochemical tests and polishing tests on the CMP machine were performed with technical CMP slurries. The sliding action of the alumina ball on tungsten in the 0.01 M H2SO4 solution was found to cause three distinct wear responses depending on imposed electrode potential. Below the first threshold potential the wear is low due to negligible oxide film formation. In the following wear region, up to the second threshold potential, materials deterioration in the rubbed area proceeds by cyclic mechanical removal of the WO3 passive film followed by repassivation of tungsten. The amount of anodic oxidation corresponds to the overall removed metal volume. Beyond the second threshold potential a compact tribolayer of WO3 (more than 400 nm thick), probably formed by agglomeration of oxide particles detached from the metal surface, forms and covers the wear track. Similar tribocorrosion behavior of tungsten was also observed in the presence of 0.1 M H3PO4. The presence of chelating agents, lactic acid and phosphoric acid, in the 0.01 M H2SO4 solution does not change the volume of material wastage at potentials below the second threshold potential. Beyond this electrode potential, lactic acid promotes WO3 dissolution and thus impedes the third body formation and enhances wear. Electrochemical factors have a strong influence on the tungsten CMP removal rate. It was found that CMP removal rate increases with the open circuit potential (electrode potential) and with passivation charge density. A good correlation of tribocorrosion results and CMP practice was observed. Tribocorrosion models can be successfully applied to the tribocorrosion of tungsten and as well can be fairly used for modelling the material removal in CMP.

Several metallic components of pressurized water reactors (PWR) used in nuclear power plants are exposed to the combined degradation by friction and corrosion (tribocorrosion). In PWR, corrosion arises from the water pressurized at 150 bars and maintained at 300°C and results in the build up of a micrometer thick surface oxide film. Tribocorrosion is of complex nature as it involves multi-scale interactions between mechanical, chemical and material factors. Nevertheless, PWR component manufacturers are interested in understanding the deterioration mechanisms in order to select appropriate materials as well as predicting the component lifetime. This thesis is a contribution towards the elucidation of the tribocorrosion mechanisms of a specific PWR component (austenitic stainless steel control rods). The research is focused on two inter-related aspects related to the subsurface deformation induced by friction and to the high temperature and high-pressure oxidation kinetics of austenitic stainless steel under tribocorrosion conditions. The subsurface deformation is investigated by using a model tribocorrosion system consisting in an alumina ball sliding against a 304L austenitic stainless steel in sulphuric acid at ambient temperature under electrochemical control. This model system allows studying subsurface deformation in absence of a thick high temperature oxide films that can complicate the interpretation of the results. Subsurface deformation was characterized using SEM, EBDS and FIB cross-sections. Good correlation was found with the deformation found in pressurized water. Subsurface deformation was found to result in the formation of a recrystallised layer of nano-grains close to the surface and an underlying layer exhibiting a deformation gradient. The thickness of the recrystallized zone is highly affected by the presence or the absence of a few nm thick oxide in the contact. However, no obvious correlation between the thickness of the recrystallized zone, or any other measured deformation appearance, and wear could be found. The effect of oxidation was studied using a simulator (Aurore), reproducing the chemical and mechanical PWR conditions of control rods. It includes an electrochemical set-up allowing measuring in-situ and in real time the oxidation kinetic. The oxidation kinetic was found to follow a parabolic law (diffusion controlled oxide growth). Rubbing resulted in repeated scratching of the surface leading to a thinning of the oxide film and thus to an enhanced anodic oxidation. A quantitative model of the electrochemical response of stainless steel in PWR conditions was developed. Based on these results and on the third body theory of wear, a mechanistic model was proposed for describing the material behaviour in contacts operating in pressurized water. This model explains a certain number of practical observations obtained in nuclear plants or in simulators concerning chemical and materials effects on component degradation.
