A Robotic Teacher Community to Foster the Integration of Educational Robotics in School

The digital society requires the acquisition of skills related to computer sciences like computational thinking or competences in coding. Also transversal competences like communication, collaboration and creativity are increasingly important. Educational robotics is perceived as a valuable tool to increase such competences and is more and more present in the new school curricula. However only few teachers carry out educational robotics activities in their classes. The Roteco project aims to train school teachers in the field of educational robotics and computer science and to develop a community where teachers can find support and exchange experiences and educational activities in order to increase the presence of robotics in school classes. In the project a teacher training and a collaborative platform have been developed. The platform allows teachers to contact other teachers or experts. Teachers can easily publish, select and download didactic activities of other pairs with the related materials. In this paper the project and first results are presented.

Teachers’ Reasons to Join a Community About Educational Robotics and STEAM: A Swiss Experience

Today we live in a digital society that requires the acquisition of new skills related to computer science, such as computational thinking or coding skills, as well as cross-curricular skills, such as communication, collaboration and creativity. A possible tool that allows fostering these skills in schools is educational robotics. However, the question is how to bring educational robotics into schools? Indeed, only a few teachers are conducting educational robotics activities in their classrooms. This is where Roteco comes in. We aim to create a community of teachers interested in educational robotics and to offer training in this field in order to increase the presence of robotics in the classroom. As part of the project, a teacher training concept, a collaboration platform and various teaching resources were developed. This paper presents the project and the results of a survey with 87 teachers about the reasons why they joined the Roteco community and how they contribute to its growth. The main findings show that teachers joined Roteco to remain informed about robotics, to be inspired by other teachers and to get didactic resources. Only a few of them also joined in order to communicate with other teachers or to share their own materials. In order to create a vibrant community is however important to motivate teachers to be more active.

How to support teachers to carry out educational robotics activities in school? The case of Roteco, the Swiss robotic teacher community

The development of 21st-century transversal competences such as communication, cooperation, and creativity as well as computational thinking and programming may be aided through educational robotics (ER). Different countries have inserted ER in their school curricula, however, to date ER activities are not carried out systematically in all schools and are more an initiative from single pioneer teachers. In Switzerland, to support all teachers to carry out ER activities and to foster the presence of ER in schools, a robotic teacher community (Roteco) has been created. Teachers may obtain assistance, share experiences, and access instructional resources through a digital platform, which will help them and spread the use of robotics in the classroom. For instance, the site enables educators to simply submit their activities, connect with other educators and professionals, choose and download didactic activities from their peers together with the relevant resources, and stay updated on the newest information, events, research, and further education courses in the field of ER. In the first years of the platform’s existence, already more than 1,400 teachers have joined it. The project and the findings of two surveys are presented in this publication. The first survey was carried out in 2020 with 87 teachers and the second one in 2021 with 48 teachers from the community. The findings highlight the community’s greatest accomplishments as well as the motivations for teachers’ recruitment into the Roteco community and their contributions to its expansion. The results of this project allow for discussion on how to support teachers to implement ER activities in schools in a systematic way.

A computer science and robotics integration model for primary school: evaluation of a large-scale in-service K-4 teacher-training program

Integrating computer science (CS) into school curricula has become a worldwide preoccupation. Therefore, we present a CS and Robotics integration model and its validation through a large-scale pilot study in the administrative region of the Canton Vaud in Switzerland. Approximately 350 primary school teachers followed a mandatory CS continuing professional development program (CPD) of adapted format with a curriculum scaffolded by instruction modality. This included CS Unplugged activities that aim to teach CS concepts without the use of screens, and Robotics Unplugged activities that employed physical robots, without screens, to learn about robotics and CS concepts. Teachers evaluated positively the CPD and their representation of CS improved. Voluntary adoption rates reached 97% during the CPD and 80% the following year. These results combined with the underpinning literature support the generalisability of the model to other contexts.
