Charge transfer across C-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds stabilizes oil droplets in water

The hydrophobic-water interface plays a key role in biological interactions. However, both the hydrophobic-water interfacial molecular structure and the origin of the negative zeta potential of hydrophobic droplets in water are heavily contested. We report polarimetric vibrational sum-frequency scattering of the O-D and C-H stretch modes of 200-nanometer hexadecane oil droplets dispersed in water. An unusually broad spectral distribution (2550 to 2750 per centimeter) of interfacial water molecules that were not hydrogen bonded to other water molecules was observed, as well as a blue shift in the vibrational frequency of the interfacial hexadecane C-H stretch modes. Oil and water frequency shifts correlated with the negative electrostatic charge. Molecular dynamics simulations demonstrated that the unexpected strong charge-transfer interactions arose from interfacial C-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds.

Design, Synthesis and Characterization of New Nanoparticle Stabilizers and Their Application in Catalysis

In recent years, a strong emphasis in research towards creating sustainable and environmental friendly chemical processes has propelled the development of novel types of catalytic systems that combine advantages from homogeneous and heterogeneous processes. In this respect, transition metal based nanoparticles, TM-NPs, are excellent candidates with properties that offer high efficiency, high selectivity and the possibility of recycling. However, due to the particularly small size, within the nanoscale, TM-NPs are generally only kinetically stable and must be supported or stabilized by molecular systems to prevent aggregation into larger, less active materials. The work presented herein concerns the design, synthesis, characterisation and the applications of new TM-NP protecting agents, which are based on polymers functionalized with components that compose ionic liquids, P-ILs. Specifically, these P-ILs feature a hydrophobic poly-norbornene framework prepared using Ring Opening Metathesis Polymerization, ROMP, with pendant imidazolium-based ionic liquid substituents that allow fine tuning of the polymer solubility by anion-exchange. In Chapter 2, an aqueous, soluble P-IL containing the 1,2-dimethylimidazolium methane-sulphonate substituent and its use in the synthesis of aqueous gold NP, GNP, solutions is described. These particular TM-NPs were characterized by UV-VIS spectroscopy and Transmission Electron Microscopy, TEM. Subsequently, the P-IL/GNP solutions were used to catalyse the reduction of p-nitrophenol and the hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde, both reactions are found to exhibit excellent activity under mild conditions. In Chapter 3, the potential of aqueous P-IL stabilizers to transfer GNPs from water to hydrophobic ILs and organic solvents is demonstrated. Using an anion-exchange process, the phase change does not result in GNP aggregation, as confirmed by UV-VIS spectroscopy and TEM analysis. Moreover, the same P-ILs were used as a protecting agents for the synthesis of aqueous rhodium NPs, RhNPs, which have been applied in the catalytic hydrogenation of natural compounds, including limonene, cinnamaldehyde, citral and α- and β-ionones. Through anion-exchange, the aqueous P-IL stabilized RhNPs are readily transferred into hydrophobic ILs, then used as catalysts in the hydrogenation of styrene and limonene. The stabilized RhNPs exhibited good activity, even after recycling. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, XPS, analysis demonstrated conclusively that the anion exchange and phase transfer of the Rh/Au-NP-IL system. In Chapter 4, three P-ILs containing poly-oxy linker groups, strategically placed between the poly-norbornene framework and the ionic groups, are described. The linkers provide additional stabilization through steric stabilization and coordination via the ether functional groups. These P-ILs were used to stabilize aqueous GNPs, which were characterized by UV-VIS spectroscopy and TEM. Their application in the reduction of p-nitrophenol reduction was demonstrated. Preliminary studies on the stabilization mode of PILs shown that the polymers, despite the presence of ionic groups, can stabilize electrostatically stabilized aqueous GNPs which otherwise aggregate in presence of water soluble imidazolium-based ILs. Moreover, they display good efficiency in terms of steric stabilization, comparable to systems featuring the poly-vinylpyrrolidone, PVP.

Storage of Renewable Energy by Reduction of CO2 with Hydrogen

The main difference between the past energy economy during the industrialization period which was mainly based on mining of fossil fuels, e.g. coal, oil and methane and the future energy economy based on renewable energy is the requirement for storage of the energy fluxes. Renewable energy, except biomass, appears in time- and location-dependent energy fluxes as heat or electricity upon conversion. Storage and transport of energy requires a high energy density and has to be realized in a closed materials cycle. The hydrogen cycle, i.e. production of hydrogen from water by renewable energy, storage and use of hydrogen in fuel cells, combustion engines or turbines, is a closed cycle. However, the hydrogen density in a storage system is limited to 20 mass% and 150 kg/m(3) which limits the energy density to about half of the energy density in fossil fuels. Introducing CO, into the cycle and storing hydrogen by the reduction of CO, to hydrocarbons allows renewable energy to be converted into synthetic fuels with the same energy density as fossil fuels. The resulting cycle is a closed cycle (CO2 neutral) if CO, is extracted from the atmosphere. Today's technology allows CO, to be reduced either by the Sabatier reaction to methane, by the reversed water gas shift reaction to CO and further reduction of CO by the Fischer Tropsch synthesis (FTS) to hydrocarbons or over methanol to gasoline. The overall process can only be realized on a very large scale, because the large number of by-products of FTS requires the use of a refinery. Therefore, a well-controlled reaction to a specific product is required for the efficient conversion of renewable energy (electricity) into an easy to store liquid hydrocarbon (fuel). In order to realize a closed hydrocarbon cycle the two major challenges are to extract CO, from the atmosphere close to the thermodynamic limit and to reduce CO2 with hydrogen in a controlled reaction to a specific hydrocarbon. Nanomaterials with nanopores and the unique surface structures of metallic clusters offer new opportunities for the production of synthetic fuels.

Alignment of energy levels in amorphous oxides and at semiconductor-water interfaces

We conduct a detailed investigation of defects in two representative amorphous oxides: amorphous Al2O3 (am-Al2O3) and TiO2 (am-TiO2), by combining ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and hybrid functional calculations. Our results indicate that oxygen vacancies and interstitials occur neither in am-Al2O3 nor in am-TiO2 due to structural rearrangements which assimilate the defect structure, and that the injection of extra holes can lead to the formation of O-O peroxy linkages. In am-Al2O3, hydrogen is found to be amphoteric. Based on localized Wannier functions, we identify the nominal charge state and the composition of the defect core units related to C and N impurities in am-Al2O3, which are found to depend on the total charge set in the simulation cell. Through the adopted electron counting rule, we assess that carbon and nitrogen impurities are only found in neutral and in singly positive charge states, respectively, indicating that none of them gives charge transition levels in am-Al2O3. In addition, those defect core units are shown to incorporate a varying number of oxygen atoms, by which their formation energy is dependent on the oxygen chemical potential. In addition, we propose an exchange mechanism for hole transport in am-TiO2 that relies on the simultaneous breaking and forming of O-O peroxy linkages that share one O atom. Through the use of nudged-elastic-band calculations, a hopping path as long as 1.2 nm with barriers of 0.3-0.5 eV is demonstrated, suggesting that hole diffusion through O-O peroxy linkages is viable in am-TiO2. In this work, we also determine the band alignment between various semiconductors and liquid water by combining MD simulations of atomistic interface models, electronic-structure calculations at the hybrid-functional and GW levels, and a computational standard hydrogen electrode (SHE). Our study comprises GaAs, GaP, GaN, CdS, ZnO, SnO2, rutile and anatase TiO2. For each semiconductor, we generate atomistic interface models with liquid water at the pH corresponding to the point of zero charge. The MD simulations are started from initial configurations, in which the water molecules are either molecularly (m) or dissociatively (d) adsorbed on the semiconductor surface. The calculated band offsets are found to be strongly influenced by the adsorption mode at the semiconductor-water interface, leading to differences larger than 1 eV between m and d models of the same semiconductor. We then assess the accuracy of various ab initio electronic-structure schemes in determining the band alignment. In the last part, we try to evaluate photocatalysts for water-splitting by considering the surface coverage and the energy alignment. We determine surface concentrations of water molecules, protons, and hydroxyl ions adsorbed at the semiconductor-water interfaces mentioned above as a function of pH. This is achieved through the calculation of the acidity constants at the surface sites, which are derived from ab initio MD simulations and a grand-canonical formulation of adsorbates. It is finally shown how the potential of a semiconductor material as photocatalysts for water splitting can be inferred by combining the nature of the surface coverage and the alignment of the band edges to the relevant redox levels.
