Broadband Optical Spectrum Downconversion to RF Using Integrated Dual-Comb Source

Combining all the benefits of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy in a chip scale spectroscopic sensor looks promising for mobile and wearable platform development. Dual-comb spectroscopy enables downconversion of optical absorption spectra into the RF range for fast measurement using single photodetector [1] . Some cases of dual-comb spectroscopy based on laser-pumped MRs were successfully demonstrated [2] – [4] . The early attempts at combining LD-pumped integrated frequency combs into dual-comb were also reported [5] . However, to demonstrate viability of the technology for applications, it is important to integrate LD and SiN-chip with the MR into the compact autonomously operated device generating at least one optical frequency comb.

The application of electrospray (ES) for quantitative transfer of analytes from solution to an internal reflection element for analysis by Attenuated Total Reflectance - Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy has been developed in this work. The method (ES-ATR-FTIR) is evaluated with nonvolatile and semivolatile organic and inorganic compounds dissolved in pure organic solvents, or organics in mixture with water. The technique demonstrates the capability for rapid solvent evaporation from dilute solutions, facilitating the creation of thin films that allow ATR-FTIR to generate transmission-mode-like spectra. ES-ATR-FTIR with multiple reflections displays a linear response (R2 = 0.95–0.99) in absorbance with the deposited mass and instrumental detection limit below 100 ng, which demonstrates potential for quantitative applications. The method is applicable when crystalline substances are present, even though the formation of particles restricts the upper limit of mass loadings relative to substances forming homogeneous films. In addition to the solvent, semivolatile compounds can evaporate during the ES process; the magnitude of losses will depend on solution composition and temperature.

On-chip NIR optical spectrometer based on polymeric waveguide and metallic nano-structures

In this work, we report about optical spectrometry using gold nano-structures printed on a polymer based integrated optical waveguide. The optical waveguide is a single mode buried waveguide, having dimensions of 3x2.2 mu m(2). It is made from a combination of photo-polymerizable materials and is fabricated by photolithography on a glass substrate. To sense the electric field inside the waveguide, a gold nano-coupler array of thin lines (50 nm thick and 8 mu m length) is embedded on top of the aforementioned waveguide. They are produced by E-beam lithography. The array pitch is 2.872 mu m and the number of lines 564, which yields an array of 1.619 mm length. The device is enclosed with a glass superstrate to prevent it from dust and destruction. Both waveguide ports are polished and the output port in particular, is coated with a thin gold layer to assimilate a mirror and hence, it enables the creation of stationary waves inside the structure. The measurement procedure involves light injection using a single mode fiber carrying both visible light (658nm) and infrared light (785nm), used for alignment and measurement purposes respectively. Stationary waves generated inside the guide constitute the spatial interferogram. Locally, light is out-coupled using the nano-couplers and allows measuring the interferogram structure. The resulting pattern is imaged by a vision system involving an optical microscope with a digital camera mounted on-top of it. Signal processing, mainly based on Fast Fourier transform is performed on the captured signal to extract the spectral content of the measured signal.

Toward High-Throughput Cryogenic IR Fingerprinting of Mobility-Separated Glycan Isomers

Infrared (IR) spectroscopy is a powerful tool used to infer detailed structural information on molecules, often in conjunction with quantum-chemical calculations. When applied to cryogenically cooled ions, IR spectra provide unique fingerprints that can be used for biomolecular identification. This is particularly important in the analysis of isomeric biopolymers, which are difficult to distinguish using mass spectrometry. However, IR spectroscopy typically requires laser systems that need substantial user attention and measurement times of tens of minutes, which limits its analytical utility. We report here the development of a new high-throughput instrument that combines ultrahigh-resolution ion-mobility spectrometry with cryogenic IR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry, and we apply it to the analysis of isomeric glycans. The ion mobility step, which is based on structures for lossless ion manipulations (SLIM), separates glycan isomers, and an IR fingerprint spectrum identifies them. An innovative cryogenic ion trap allows multiplexing the acquisition of analyte IR fingerprints following mobility separation, and using a turn-key IR laser, we can obtain spectra and identify isomeric species in less than a minute. This work demonstrates the potential of IR fingerprinting methods to impact the analysis of isomeric biomolecules and more specifically glycans.
