Hearing lossHearing loss is a partial or total inability to hear. Hearing loss may be present at birth or acquired at any time afterwards. Hearing loss may occur in one or both ears. In children, hearing problems can affect the ability to acquire spoken language, and in adults it can create difficulties with social interaction and at work. Hearing loss can be temporary or permanent. Hearing loss related to age usually affects both ears and is due to cochlear hair cell loss. In some people, particularly older people, hearing loss can result in loneliness.
RadarLe radar (acronyme issu de l'anglais dio etection nd anging) est un système qui utilise les ondes électromagnétiques pour détecter la présence et déterminer la position ainsi que la vitesse d'objets tels que les avions, les bateaux, ou la pluie. Les ondes envoyées par l'émetteur sont réfléchies par la cible, et les signaux de retour (appelés écho radar ou écho-radar) sont captés et analysés par le récepteur, souvent situé au même endroit que l'émetteur.
Lanceur orbital monoétageUn lanceur orbital monoétage (en single-stage-to-orbit, ou SSTO) est un véhicule spatial capable d'atteindre l'orbite terrestre et la vitesse de satellisation sans avoir à larguer un ou des étages propulsifs au cours de son ascension. Plusieurs projets de ce type ont été étudiés (HOTOL, Skylon, McDonnell Douglas DC-X, le Lockheed-Martin X-33, le Roton SSTO...), mais aucun n'a jusqu'à présent abouti, car le concept nécessite d'effectuer plusieurs percées technologiques.
Highway networkIn machine learning, the Highway Network was the first working very deep feedforward neural network with hundreds of layers, much deeper than previous artificial neural networks. It uses skip connections modulated by learned gating mechanisms to regulate information flow, inspired by Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) recurrent neural networks. The advantage of a Highway Network over the common deep neural networks is that it solves or partially prevents the vanishing gradient problem, thus leading to easier to optimize neural networks.
Multistage rocketA multistage rocket or step rocket is a launch vehicle that uses two or more rocket stages, each of which contains its own engines and propellant. A tandem or serial stage is mounted on top of another stage; a parallel stage is attached alongside another stage. The result is effectively two or more rockets stacked on top of or attached next to each other. Two-stage rockets are quite common, but rockets with as many as five separate stages have been successfully launched.
