SAFETRANS: a system for 3D visibility estimation and cloud cover detection

The estimation of visibility is of significant importance in aviation safety and forms part of the measurements rou-tinely collected in real time to provide safety guidelines and decisions. Our work concerns the creation and imple-mentation of a lidar-based visibility estimation system as part of the SAFETRANS research program. We created a reproducible system to (1) support standard airport equipment, (2) serve simultaneously as a visibility meter and a ceilometer reporting on cloud cover, (3) offer increased accuracy and improved capabilities compared to standard-ized equipment currently in use while (4) requiring minimal user training to function. This work presents the vis-ibility estimation and cloud cover algorithms and subsequently reports on results of field tests in a number of Greek airports under various atmospheric conditions.& COPY; 2023 Optica Publishing Group

Visibilité

En météorologie, la visibilité est la distance à laquelle il est possible de distinguer clairement un objet, quelle que soit l'heure. On peut mesurer la visibilité horizontale et verticale, souvent différentes l'une de l'autre. Par exemple, la visibilité horizontale peut être très mauvaise dans un banc de brouillard mais relativement bonne à la verticale si celui-ci est mince. La visibilité météorologique se rapporte à la transparence de l'air : la visibilité est donc indépendante de la présence de lumière.

Nuage

Un nuage est en météorologie une masse visible constituée initialement d'une grande quantité de gouttelettes d’eau (parfois de cristaux de glace associés à des aérosols chimiques ou des minéraux) en suspension dans l’atmosphère au-dessus de la surface d'une planète. L’aspect d'un nuage dépend de sa nature, de sa dimension, de la lumière qu’il reçoit, ainsi que du nombre et de la répartition des particules qui le constituent. Les gouttelettes d’eau d’un nuage proviennent de la condensation de la vapeur d'eau contenue dans l’air.
