Granular noise is visually bothersome with respect to high quality rendition, and it is a well known source of visual artifacts for coding algorithms. This work considers the application of nonlinear filtering techniques to granular noise reduction and their effects on video coding. The performance of the examined techniques on coded images is documented both in terms of visual rendition, and in terms of objective indexes. The obtained coding quality improvement makes the proposed method rather adviseable.
