Chromaticity Gamut Enhancement by Heptatone Multi-Color Printing

Résumé

The present paper studies the chromaticity gamut of multi-color printing processes. Heptatone (7-color) printing - the most promising variant of multi-color printing - offers a significantly larger gamut than a conventional CMYK printing process, approaching CRT and film gamuts. The behavior of the process in the device-independent CIE-XYZ and CIE-Luv* colorimetric spaces is explored using the compound Neugebauer model developped for this purpose. A simple and straightforward Moiri-free separation process is proposed. The strong point of the proposed separation process is the fact that only 3 different screen layers are needed for any odd number of basic colors including black.

Visually-based color space tetrahedrizations for printing with custom inks

Printing with custom inks is useful for extending the gamut of printed images, for creating artistically appealing designs or for providing protection against counterfeiting (security documents). The basic colors we consider, consist of the custom inks, their superpositions and the white paper. Color separation for custom inks requires to determine the relative amounts of the basic colors allowing to render each desired input color. To achieve this goal, one may tetrahedrize the set of basic colors on a given 3D color space. However, even for a few basic colors, there are many different tetrahedrizations (for example with 8 points in 3D space, one may build more than 120 different tetrahedrizations). When printed at a very high resolution, i.e. when screen dots are not visible, different tetrahedrizations yield halftoned color images which look similar. However, in the case of large screen tiles or for sophisticated screens, the dither patterns may remain visible. When the halftone patterns are visible, certain tetrahedrizations yield well-behaved regular halftone patterns whereas other tetrahedrizations tend to create false contours due to successions of high and low frequency halftone patterns. We show that the standard Delaunay tetrahedrization yields visually poor results: transitions between tetrahedra with vertices having high luminance differences (CIE-LAB Δ L) and tetrahedra with vertices having low luminance differences yield false contours. In the present paper, we experiment with various criteria for choosing the tetrahedrization yielding the least amounts of visual artifacts (false contours). Such criteria comprise the selection of tetrahedrizations which either (1) maximize the mean CIE-LAB Δ L value within the tetrahedra; (2) maximize the variance in Δ L (VarDelta;L) within the tetrahedra; (3) constrain a maximum number of tetrahedra to have as a common edge the line connecting the darkest with the brightest basic color; or (4) constrain a maximum number of tetrahedra to have as one common vertex the darkest basic color. The results are illustrated with color wedges crossing the printing gamut of the given custom inks.

Printing with custom inks is of interest both for artistic purposes and for printing security documents such as banknotes. However, in order to create designs with only a few custom inks, a general purpose high-quality gamut reduction technique is needed. Most existing gamut mapping techniques map an input gamut such as the gamut of a CRT display into the gamut of an output device such as a CMYK printer. In the present contribution, we are interested in printing with up to three custom inks, which in the general case define a rather narrow color gamut compared with the gamut of standard CMYK printers. The proposed color gamut reduction techniques should work for any combination of custom inks and have a smooth and predictable behavior. When the black ink is available, the lightness levels present in the original image remain nearly identical. Original colors with hues outside the target gamut are projected onto the gray axis. Original colors with hues inside the target gamut hues are rendered as faithful as possible. When the black ink is not available, we map the gray axis G into a colored curve G' connecting in the 3D color space the paper white and the darkest available color formed by the superposition of the 3 inks. The mapped gray axis curve G' is given by the Neugebauer equations when enforcing equal amounts of custom inks. After lightness mapping, hue and saturation mappings are carried out. When the target gamut does not incorporate the gray axis, we divide it into two volumes, one on the desaturated side of the mapped gray axis curve G' and the other on the saturated side of the G' curve. Colors whose hues are not part of the target color gamut are mapped to colors located on the desaturated side of the G' curve. Colors within the set of printable hues remain within the target color gamut and retain as much as possible their original hue and saturation
