We show that optical microcavities drive strong coherent modulations the in co-propagating free-electron beams, with sidebands spanning over 700eV from a sub-mu m-long interaction. The electrons probe the cavity's ringdown time and distinguish the modes spectrally. (C) 2020 The Author(s)

Whispering-gallery wave

Whispering-gallery waves, or whispering-gallery modes, are a type of wave that can travel around a concave surface. Originally discovered for sound waves in the whispering gallery of St Paul's Cathedral, they can exist for light and for other waves, with important applications in nondestructive testing, lasing, cooling and sensing, as well as in astronomy. Whispering-gallery waves were first explained for the case of St Paul's Cathedral circa 1878 by Lord Rayleigh, who revised a previous misconception that whispers could be heard across the dome but not at any intermediate position.

Une fibre optique est un fil dont l’âme, très fine et faite de verre ou de plastique, a la propriété de conduire la lumière et sert pour la fibroscopie, l'éclairage ou la transmission de données numériques. Elle offre un débit d'information nettement supérieur à celui des câbles coaxiaux et peut servir de support à un réseau « large bande » par lequel transitent aussi bien la télévision, le téléphone, la visioconférence ou les données informatiques.

Blocage de mode

Le blocage de mode ou verrouillage de mode désigne une technique de synchronisation de la phase des modes laser destinée à produire de courtes et intenses impulsions lumineuses. Le blocage de mode est réalisé à l'aide de différents éléments optiques : colorant à absorbant saturable, modulateur acousto-optique, cellule de Pockels... La principale application du blocage de mode est la réalisation de laser femtoseconde. Les premiers lasers à colorant délivrant de courtes impulsions sont apparus dans les années 1970, mais les impulsions qu'ils délivrent ne sont pas suffisamment stables .
