This lecture discusses the importance of urban livestock as a source of income, nutrition, and food security in developing countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. It covers the advantages, challenges, impacts, and constraints of urban livestock farming, highlighting its role in providing livelihoods for low-income populations, creating employment opportunities, contributing to food security, and improving the environment. The lecture also addresses the different forms of urban livestock farming, from small-scale activities in urban areas to more intensive practices in peri-urban zones. Despite its benefits, urban livestock farming faces constraints such as limited space, high water costs, expensive inputs, competition from imports, and health risks associated with unregulated medication use. The lecture concludes by emphasizing the increasing importance of urban livestock farming in sub-Saharan African cities.
