This lecture introduces the fundamentals of material balances in chemical engineering, covering process definition, material balance calculations, chemical reaction stoichiometry, and energy balances on reactive processes. Students learn to calculate the heat needed for separation processes and understand the enthalpy of reaction. The lecture also explores the classification of reactions based on the sign of the enthalpy change, distinguishing between exothermic and endothermic reactions. Methods for solving energy balances in reactive systems, including the heat of reaction and heat of formation methods, are discussed. Practical examples and calculations are provided to illustrate the application of these concepts.
