This lecture covers the fundamentals of chemical reactions, including stoichiometry, algebraic expressions for reactions, reaction enthalpy, Hess's law, bond dissociation enthalpies, and the use of progress variables. It explains how to calculate reaction enthalpies using bond energies and how to estimate reaction enthalpies using bond dissociation enthalpies. The lecture also introduces the concept of reaction entropy and how it relates to the progress of a reaction. Through examples and theoretical explanations, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the quantitative aspects of chemical reactions.
