This lecture explores the mechanobiology of biofilms, focusing on the discovery of mechanically-activated Piezo channels and their essential role in linking mechanical forces to cellular responses. It delves into the impact of Piezo channels on various physiological processes, such as red blood cell volume regulation and lung inflation-induced apnoea. The lecture also discusses the architecture of biofilms, the advantages of living in a biofilm, and the coordination of matrix production in Vibrio cholerae biofilms. Furthermore, it examines the mechanical properties of biofilm matrix components, pressure sensing in biofilms, and the deformation dynamics of biofilms on soft substrates.
