This lecture covers the response and design of inelastic Single Degree of Freedom (SDOF) systems subjected to seismic forces. Topics include failure modes, design of new buildings with reinforced concrete walls, estimation of peak forces and displacements, and displacement-based evaluation of existing structures. The relationship between force capacity and displacement ductility is explored, along with the comparison of seismic responses between elastic and inelastic SDOF systems. Empirical relationships between force reduction factor and ductility demand are discussed, as well as the equal displacement and equal energy rules for estimating shear strength in inelastic systems.
