It delves into the rapid urban growth, demographic trends, factors driving urbanization, and examples from cities like Kinshasa and Niamey. The phenomenon of urban sprawl is discussed, highlighting differences between Northern and Southern countries. The lecture also covers the consequences of urban household impoverishment, ecological crises, and the shift from welfare states to market-oriented policies. The program 'MOOCs for Africa' by EPFL, Swiss Confederation, and Edmond de Rothschild Foundations is presented as a sustainable initiative for higher education in Africa.
