This lecture presents a literature review on the emergence and consolidation of gamification in education and training. It explores the application of game mechanisms in non-gaming environments to enhance learning processes and engagement. The review analyzes around 120 papers published between 2011 and 2014, focusing on gamification techniques in various educational settings. It discusses the evolution of the concept of gamification, from being used as a synonym of Game Based Learning to a broader educational strategy. The lecture also delves into the potential of gamification to strengthen engagement, change behaviors, and support innovation in education, as highlighted by Gartner Inc. The dark side of gamification is also addressed, examining negative effects and game design elements that may impact learners.
