This lecture covers force-based seismic design methods, focusing on the response spectrum method and the equivalent lateral force method. It explains how to estimate peak forces and displacements of structures during earthquakes, emphasizing the design of new buildings with reinforced concrete walls and the evaluation of existing structures. Modal analysis, modal coordinates, and the modal analysis solution for linear systems are discussed. The response spectrum method is detailed for both elastic and inelastic multi-degree of freedom systems, with examples and calculation methods provided. Different combination rules for calculating maximum responses are explained, including the absolute sum and SRSS-rule.
