This lecture discusses the Petilla Interneuron Nomenclature Group's efforts to establish a terminology for GABAergic interneurons in the cerebral cortex. The classification system aims to organize the vast amount of data produced by neuroscience research. The lecture covers the anatomical, physiological, and molecular features of these interneurons, emphasizing the importance of consistent adoption of the terminology for future classification efforts. Various electrical behaviors of GABAergic interneurons are explored, including fast spiking, adapting, bursting, and more. The lecture delves into the challenges of neuron classification, the diversity of ion channels contributing to different electrical features, and the complex interactions between synaptic inputs, dendritic spikes, and action potentials.
