Mobile User Navigation Supported by WSAN: Full-fledge Demo of the SmartPark System

Abstract

The purpose of this demonstration is to illustrate that an off-the-shelf Wireless Sensor and Actuator Network (WSAN) can be used to discover resource availability and guide mobile users to these resources without any support from a navigation system like GPS. The motivating application of this technical demonstration is SmartPark, a distributed system that provides drivers with turn-by-turn instructions to free parking spots in an urban environment. This demo illustrates the usage of simple localized algorithms in the scenario where no node (fixed and mobile) has a full view of the entire network and that exploit the mobility of nodes. The SmartPark application is developed in WASAL, a laboratory for prototyping ad-hoc sensor and actuator applications.
