It is located on the southern shores of Lake Morat (also known as Lake Murten). Morat is situated between Neuchâtel and Fribourg and is the capital of the See/Lac District of the canton of Fribourg. It is one of the municipalities with a majority (about 75%) of German speakers in the predominantly French-speaking Canton of Fribourg.

Its former German name was Gumschen, but this is no longer in use. Belfaux is first mentioned in the 12th century as Bellofago. In 1229 it was mentioned as Bellfozen. The municipality was formerly known by its German name Gumschen, however, that name is no longer used. On 1 January 2016, Belfaux annexed the neighboring municipality of Autafond. CorminboeufCorminboeuf (kɔʁmɛ̃bœf; Corminbœf, locally Korminbà kɔʁmɛ̃ˈbɑ) is a municipality in the district of Sarine in the canton of Fribourg in Switzerland. In 2017 the former municipality of Chésopelloz merged into the municipality of Corminboeuf. Corminboeuf is first mentioned in 1142 as Cormenbo. In the 15th and 16th centuries it was known as Sankt Görg or St Georg. After the 2017 merger Corminboeuf had an area of . Before the merger Corminboeuf had an area, (as of the 2004/09 survey) of . Of this area, about 51.

It was formerly known in German as Siebenzach, but this usage is no longer common. Givisiez is first mentioned in 1142 as Juvinsie. Until the beginning of the 19th century it was known as Juvisy. AareThe Aare (ˈaːrə) or Aar (aːr) is a tributary of the High Rhine and the longest river that both rises and ends entirely within Switzerland. Its total length from its source to its junction with the Rhine comprises about , during which distance it descends , draining an area of , almost entirely within Switzerland, and accounting for close to half the area of the country, including all of Central Switzerland. There are more than 40 hydroelectric plants along the course of the Aare.
