The LifeV library: engineering mathematics beyond the proof of concept

LifeV is a library for the finite element (FE) solution of partial differential equations in one, two, and three dimensions. It is written in C++ and designed to run on diverse parallel architectures, including cloud and high performance computing facilities. In spite of its academic research nature, meaning a library for the development and testing of new methods, one distinguishing feature of LifeV is its use on real world problems and it is intended to provide a tool for many engineering applications. It has been actually used in computational hemodynamics, including cardiac mechanics and fluid-structure interaction problems, in porous media, ice sheets dynamics for both forward and inverse problems. In this paper we give a short overview of the features of LifeV and its coding paradigms on simple problems. The main focus is on the parallel environment which is mainly driven by domain decomposition methods and based on external libraries such as MPI, the Trilinos project, HDF5 and ParMetis. Post Occupancy Evaluation, Case Studies : Rolex Learning Center

The Rolex Learning Center opened in 2010. Where do we stand 8 years after ? Students are given the floor to express their feedback on the building and the library spaces. EPFL Library was mandated to propose user spaces improvements for the building : librarians assessed the building use, explored students’ needs and present their findings. Librarians then highlight the prior needs and present their main propositions, related to furniture, spaces redesign, additional equipment and facilities in the building. They also examine the consequences for the Library to be in the Rolex Learning Center, outside and within the institution.

EPFL is bulduing its Rolex Learning Center, which will be inaugurated in 2010. Point of entry to EPFL, the Learning Center will be a place where to learn, to obtain information, and to live. It will become a place where virtual and physical components combine to provide facilitated access to knowledge. Its very concept includes the flexibility and growth potential to evolve and follow, in due course, the pedagogical, social and technical trends of the School. The RLC is built as a huge academic library, multifunctional, with a full RFID management system. The EPFL environment, the concept of the RLC and the steps of its construction are presented, with the point of view of the Head Librarian.
