Femtosecond Dynamics of Momentum-Dependent Magnetic Excitations from Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering in CaCu2O3

Taking spinon excitations in the quantum antiferromagnet CaCu2O3 as an example, we demonstrate that femtosecond dynamics of magnetic electronic excitations can be probed by direct resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). To this end, we isolate the contributions of single and double spin-flip excitations in experimental RIXS spectra, identify the physical mechanisms that cause them, and determine their respective time scales. By comparing theory and experiment, we find that double spin flips need a finite amount of time to be generated, rendering them sensitive to the core-hole lifetime, whereas single spin flips are, to a very good approximation, independent of it. This shows that RIXS can grant access to time-domain dynamics of excitations and illustrates how RIXS experiments can distinguish between excitations in correlated electron systems based on their different time dependence. © 2014 American Physical Society.

Geometric and Physical Constraints for Drone-Based Head Plane Crowd Density Estimation

State-of-the-art methods for counting people in crowded scenes rely on deep networks to estimate crowd density in the image plane. While useful for this purpose, this image- plane density has no immediate physical meaning because it is subject to perspective distortion. This is a concern in sequences acquired by drones because the viewpoint changes often. This distortion is usually handled implicitly by either learning scale- invariant features or estimating density in patches of different sizes, neither of which accounts for the fact that scale changes must be consistent over the whole scene. In this paper, we explicitly model the scale changes and reason in terms of people per square-meter. We show that feeding the perspective model to the network allows us to enforce global scale consistency and that this model can be obtained on the fly from the drone sensors. In addition, it also enables us to enforce physically-inspired temporal consistency constraints that do not have to be learned. This yields an algorithm that outperforms state-of-the-art methods in inferring crowd density from a moving drone camera especially when perspective effects are strong.

We consider a one-dimensional blood flow model suitable for larger arteries. It consists of a hyperbolic system of two coupled nonlinear equations. The model has already been successfully used in practice. Its numerical solution is usually achieved by means of an explicit Taylor-Galerkin scheme. We have proposed a different approach. The system can be transformed to characteristic directions emphasizing the physical nature of the problem. We solved this system by using an operator splitting on a moving grid.
