EHR: a Sensing Technology Readiness Model for Lifestyle Changes

Interest in developing user-centered sensing technologies for personalized behavior change has gained significant momentum. However, very little research work has been done to understand issues relative to user readiness and adoption of the sensing technologies to change their behaviors, especially the motivations as well as the concerns and impediments for adoption. We have developed a model called EHR (e-health readiness), to understand and explain the relationship between user habits, perceived healthiness and beliefs towards sensing technologies, and how these factors influence user readiness to use sensing technologies to manage their wellness. We then validate the model using psychometric methods by a large-scale user study (N = 541). Results show overall readiness to sensing technologies is positively influenced by readiness to monitor health conditions, share data within social networks, and receive recommendations. Additionally, readiness is significantly impacted by perceptions of healthiness, technology satisfaction and usefulness of such technology. Finally, we summarize user motivations and concerns for pervasive sensing tools through qualitative analysis on their comments. We present this model and the results of this survey to shed light on designing future sensing technologies for behavior change.

Cultural Adaptation, Validation, and Psychometric Description of the Pictorial Empathy Test (PET) in the Spanish Population

Research in psychology and social neuroscience distinguishes between dispositional and situational empathy for the cognitive and affective aspects of empathy. Yet, the Pictorial Empathy Test (PET) is one of the few brief tests focusing on situational affective empathy. This paper describes the adaptation of PET in a two-stage process, consisting of instrument translation and exploratory analysis of the construct in a university student sample, followed by confirmatory factor analysis and psychometric validation in a general population sample (Study 1, N = 79 and Study 2, N = 580). Our results indicate that the Spanish PET version constitutes a single factor structure with high internal consistency as well as high construct stability across genders and across in-person and online test administration setups. We report satisfactory convergent, discriminant, and nomological validity of the Spanish PET, as reported for the original version, in addition to when explored across new dimensions, like the Interpersonal Reactivity Index or in relation to age and prosocial tendencies. Based on the above, we discuss delineation of the distinct components of emotional empathy as measured by the instrument. The work presented supports the use of the Spanish PET version as a brief screening toot for state affective (emotional) empathy.

Assessing Computational Thinking: Development and Validation of the Algorithmic Thinking Test for Adults

This study describes the development and validation process of a computational thinking (CT) test for adults. The team designed a set of items and explored a subset of those through two qualitative pilots. Then, in order to provide validity evidence based on the test content, a team of 11 subject-matter experts coded the initial pool of items using two different systems of categories based on CT components and contents. Next, the items were piloted on a sample of 289 participants, 137 experts in CT, and 152 novices. After a series of confirmatory factor analyses, a unidimensional model that represents algorithmic thinking was adopted. Further analyzing the psychometric quality of the 27 items, 20 of them with excellent reliability indices were selected for the test. Thus, this study provides a tool to evaluate adults’ CT: the Algorithmic Thinking Test for Adults (ATTA), which was developed according to psychometric standards. This article also reflects on the nature of CT as a construct.
