Uplift mechanics of unanchored liquid storage tanks subjected to lateral earthquake loading

Motivated by the seismic response of unanchored liquid storage tanks, their uplift mechanism under strong lateral loading is examined. Using three-dimensional finite element models, nonlinear static analysis is conducted to define the moment-rotation relationship of uplifting tanks resting on rigid foundation and describe the evolution of critical response parameters with increasing level of lateral loading. Meridional and hoop stress, as well as their distribution and evolution with increased uplift are computed. Comparing the numerical results with the corresponding results from anchored tanks, striking differences are observed on the values of compressive meridional stresses and their distribution around the tank circumference. Cyclic analysis, associated with repeated uplift at both sides of the tank, is also performed, to obtain the corresponding hysteretic response and verify the assumption of nonlinear-elastic tank behaviour, used in several previous works. Finally, an analytical solution is developed, capable of describing tank uplift in an efficient manner. The analytical solution accounts for the special features of uplift, obtained from the finite element solution, and can be used for simple and reliable assessment of seismic performance in unanchored liquid storage tanks.

Gondo Throttled Surge Tank Numerical Modeling and Design Review

In order to increase the installed capacity, the refurbishment of Gondo high-head power plant required a modification of the existing surge tank by installing a throttle at its entrance. In a previous study, the geometry of this throttle was optimized by physical modeling to achieve the target loss coefficients as identified by a transient 1D numerical analysis. This study complements previous analyses through 3D numerical modeling using the commercial software ANSYS-CFX 19 R1. Results show that: (i) a 3D CFD model predicts sufficiently accurate local head loss coefficients that agree closely with the findings of the physical model; (ii) in contrast to a standard surge tank, the presence of a connecting gallery proved to be of insignificant effect on a surge tank equipped with a throttle, as the variations in the section of the tank cause negligible local losses compared to the ones induced by the throttle; (iii) CFD investigations of transient flow regimes revealed that the head loss coefficient of the throttle only varies for flow ratios below 20% of the total flow in the system, without significantly affecting the conclusions of the 1D transient analysis concerning minimum and maximum water level in the surge tank as well as pressure peaks below the surge tank. This study highlights the importance of examining the characteristics of a hydraulic system from a holistic approach involving hybrid modeling (1D, 3D numerical and physical) backed by calibration as well as validation with in-situ measurements. This results in a more comprehensive design of throttled surge tanks that makes full use of the advantages associated with each modeling strategy.

Earthquakes around the world have affected many unanchored tanks used for storage of gasoline. When these unanchored tanks are subjected to strong motion, the moment generated at the base, by the mass of liquid contained in the tank, will cause partial uplift of the base (i.e. rocking of the tank), inducing cycles of rotation at the wall-to-base connection. Actual codes of standard practice used in Europe and New Zealand limit the rotation that may be allowed at this connection to 0.2 radians. This limit was based on a series of assumptions since no realistic tests had been conducted. This paper presents the experimental research conducted to determine the real rotational capacity of these connections. The tests were carried out considering the bending stresses and the membrane stresses that develop at the base plate when uplift occurs. Specimens from an old existing tank (dismantled) were used. New specimens were also fabricated and used to allow for a more comprehensive study. Results from this research are presented in the form of plots of maximum rotation vs. number of cycles to failure, called RN curves. These curves revealed that the current Eurocode limit of 0.2 radians is overly conservative. Based on the limited data, a limit of 0.4 radians would be more realistic.
