The Singapore dollar (sign: S;code:SGD)istheofficialcurrencyoftheRepublicofSingapore.Itisdividedinto100cents.Itisnormallyabbreviatedwiththedollarsign, or Stodistinguishitfromotherdollar−denominatedcurrencies.TheMonetaryAuthorityofSingapore(MAS)issuesthebanknotesandcoinsoftheSingaporedollar.Asof2022,theSingaporedollaristhe10thmost−tradedcurrencyintheworldbyvalue.ApartfromitsuseinSingapore,theSingaporedollarisalsoacceptedascustomarytenderinBruneiaccordingtotheCurrencyInterchangeabilityAgreementbetweentheMonetaryAuthorityofSingaporeandtheAutoritiMonetariBruneiDarussalam(MonetaryAuthorityofBruneiDarussalam).Likewise,theBruneidollarisalsocustomarilyacceptedinSingapore.TheSpanish−AmericansilverdollarbroughtoverbytheManilagalleonswasinwidecirculationinAsiaandtheAmericasfromthe16thto19thcenturies.From1845to1939theStraitsSettlements(ofwhichSingaporeusedtobepart)issueditslocalequivalent,theStraitsdollar.ThiswasreplacedbytheMalayandollar,and,from1953,theMalayaandBritishBorneodollar,whichwereissuedbytheBoardofCommissionersofCurrency,MalayaandBritishBorneo.SingaporecontinuedtousethecommoncurrencyuponjoiningMalaysiain1963andafterSingapore′sindependencefromMalaysiain1965,buttheformalmonetaryunionbetweenMalaysia,SingaporeandBruneistoppedin1967,andSingaporeestablishedtheBoardofCommissionersofCurrency,Singapore,on7April1967andissueditsfirstcoinsandnotes.Nevertheless,theSingaporedollarwasexchangeableatparwiththeMalaysianringgituntil8May1973undertheInterchangeabilityAgreement,andinterchangeabilitywiththeBruneidollarisstillmaintained.Initially,theSingaporedollarwaspeggedtothepoundsterlingatarateoftwoshillingsandfourpencetothedollar,or£1=S60/7 or S8.57;inturn,£1=US2.80 from 1949 to 1967 so that US1=S3.06.
