Transportation planning is the process of defining future policies, goals, investments, and spatial planning designs to prepare for future needs to move people and goods to destinations. As practiced today, it is a collaborative process that incorporates the input of many stakeholders including various government agencies, the public and private businesses. Transportation planners apply a multi-modal and/or comprehensive approach to analyzing the wide range of alternatives and impacts on the transportation system to influence beneficial outcomes. Participation processes in the field of public transportation

As the complexity of urban planning increases by the discovery of new issues and new dynamics, it appears that the “role of the planner as the technical expert just supporting the political decision makers has been progressively substituted by the awareness of the wicked nature of planning problems” (Balducci and Mäntysalo 2013) and that “the notion of value-neutral expertise is no longer widely accepted” (Innes 1998). In this framework, an attempt to show the necessity for participation in public transportation planning for sustainable development derived to a proposal for defining the framework of participation, based on theories of communication, and a proposal for a series of important aspects to be taken into consideration for designing and assessing a participation framework, based on additional theories of participation processes. The study of two case studies in Switzerland and in Japan is then analysed with this framework and the results are discussed in a comparison, putting into perspective the specificities of each case with the aim of bringing a better insight about participation framework and processes. The extent to which are influenced public transportation in each case is also assessed, highlighting the need to focus on an issue specific to this transportation mode in order to make the study of participation process in this field relevant. Finally, a set of recommendation is proposed, based on the theory from the first part and the points highlighted in the second part. EPFL

Lane and pathway thickness: definition essay based on two case studies of Algerian transport projects. Planning and transport engineering have for a long time considered pathways and lanes as continuous lines connecting a point A to a point B. In terms of transport, those points are considered as places located in the space-time, while the link between them is considered as a "no-place" that should be reduced in terms of travel time or distance.This transport and mobility representation does not take into consideration the reality of pathways' territorial thickness. The latter relates on the first hand to the multiplicity of activities, temporalities and representations that are overlaid on each other like a palimpsest. On the other hand, thinking in terms of lines is quite reductive. It denies the fact that a line has a thickness that includes a part of the crossed territory on both sides of the line itself. This paper will contribute first to define the territorial thickness of pathways or lanes. It will distinguish between vertical and horizontal thickness. Then, the text will explore methods to identify and characterize it. Finally, through two case studies in Algeria, we will show how transport planning at local as well as regional scales denies this thickness and disturbs lanes and pathways systems.

The intense urbanization of cities has left few options when it comes to insert large mobility infrastructure they need to move their inhabitants. A surface rail network, a dedicated roadway bus line or any other mobility infrastructure such as a tramway at the urban surface represent challenging interfaces to set up, particularly because of level crossings and physical barriers that they induce in the urban space. To avoid this occupation of the surface and the resulting urban scars, a lot has already been invested in the underground. Whilst, the airspace is still very little exploited by urban transport systems. In order to deepen knowledge in this area, the research theme focused on the urban ropeways, a cable air transport system, which several innovative examples can be found in Latin America. Relevant for whom? The research conducted is divided into two stages. As a first step, a sociological analysis made it possible to determine how urban ropeways are relevant for users and represent an interesting alternative to other means of public transportation. This analysis is based on a survey among users of ten public transportation lines in Switzerland and Brazil. Relevance where? In a latter phase, the analysis concerns the project of urban ropeways in the urbanized areas. This transportation system can be considered as a complex project because of its constructive characteristics, at the territorial big scale. A sequence of large mobility interfaces projected along the ropeway path transforms connectivity, density, and public space. These different architectural objects of mixed use are connected in minutes by the cable and their strong presence in the urban landscape raises questions of relevance. Spread in the Rio de Janeiro, Lake Geneva and New York metropolis, ten cable routes are studied, taking into account the temporality of project progress and the degree of urbanization of the target territory. This evaluation of the project practice aims to determine the extent to which urban ropeways is likely to be developed in European territory, Swiss in this instance. At the end of these analysis, the thesis makes it possible to conclude that urban ropeways have their relevance in European cities, but under fairly specific conditions.
